Elon Musk's DOGE Targets Labor Department

Ahead of a planned Department of Labor visit by Elon Musk’s government-slashing group, unions launched protests and a lawsuit.

A coalition of unions asked a federal court to block far-right billionaire Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing the internal systems of the Department of Labor (DOL), after In These Times broke the news of a planned meeting with the agency this week.

But on Friday a federal judge denied the request, saying the unions lacked standing.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, was the latest in a flurry of legal challenges from public sector unions seeking to halt Musk and his DOGE project’s slash-and-burn tour through federal agencies. But unlike actions filed after the damage is already underway, the plaintiffs — including the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Communications Workers of America (CWA), and the Economic Policy Institute — sought a temporary restraining order to keep Musk and his minions out of the DOL preemptively.

The legal challenge, as well as protests in front of the DOL’s D.C. headquarters, came together after I broke the news on social media Wednesday that Musk and DOGE were planning to target the DOL.
