WORCESTER ― Student workers at Clark University gathered at the main entrance to the school on Thursday as part of a labor action against the university.
The students are seeking the right to unionize, a contentious issue on campus that has been taking place since the start of the school year. Frustrated with what they said are low wages and inconsistent hours, undergraduate students went on strike to force action by the school.
Dozens of students could be seen holding and wearing signs that read "End Poverty Pay, Clark Employees Deserve More" and "Challenge Convention, Stop Misclassifying Employees" while student leaders led the group in chants such as "They say cutbacks, we say fight back!" and "What's disgusting? Union busting!"
"We have seen a lot of the very critical sectors of our student employees — such as admissions, the library, our proctors — have gone on strike and shown their support," sophomore Ashley Gast said. "People seem to be understanding that this stuff really matters."
