The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) still has its Free File Fillable Forms program.

It's a bit late for this year, so file this away for next year.

IRS doesn't advertise this. You have to stumble across this, as I did, to know it's there. For years I filed on paper, thinking I was not eligible to file electronically. Then one yeatr I took a close look at the instructions. There was a way I could do it.

Free File Fillable Forms is designed for taxpayers who are comfortable preparing their own taxes using IRS forms and instructions.

however, after using it for three years, with many attempts each year, I have yet to be successful in electronic filing the results. The security program fails each time. The credentials / user password (not to be confused with id ME) has never accepted a return with my "user selectable" code. The instructions are ambiguous.

Someday, I will invest the hours needed to get phone help....but not during tax season.
