Illinois Senate OKs school funding revamp with boost for Chicago

Illinois' Democrat-controlled Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to revamp the way the state funds K-12 public schools over the objections of Republicans, who labeled it a bailout for the cash-strapped Chicago Public Schools (CPS).

The measure, which passed in a 31-21 vote, now moves to the Democrat-controlled House, which is working on its own plan.

The bill's sponsor, Democratic Senator Andy Manar, said it was time to rip up Illinois' nearly 20-year-old funding formula, replacing it with one that ensures school districts with high percentages of poor students get an adequate and equitable share of state money.

"Our system today in the state is broken. It is rotten. It is not based on any level of equity," Manar said.

2. Illinois has a veto-proof majority in the House and Senate.

It's just getting them all on the same page is like trying to herd cats.


I have little doubt Rauner will veto it. He's against anything that actually helps people.

What is your theory as to why people vote in governors like Rauner, Scott Walker, Rick Snyder, Matt Bevin (R-KY). It baffles my mind.

4. In Illinois I think Quinn just got blamed for the do-nothing congress.

Nothing major really got accomplished under his watch in spite of major control of both houses of congress, and he wasn't very good at touting himself (kind of blah as a candidate). I think his major selling point was being scandal free (after arresting most of our recent past governors). Otherwise he was a good governor.

Rauner was just good at touting himself, could fund his own campaign, and had the backing of some major players (Rahm for one). Also people in Illinois just do really stupid things sometimes. He'll be a one term governor. Everyone hates him now, even the Republicans.

5. I would make a horrible candidate...

... if bragging on myself was a requirement. It would be too much like boasting, And you know. I don't care much for people who boast about themselves excessively either.

We just had a boring candidate versus a used car salesman (no offense to used car salesmen who I would never put on the same low level as Rauner).

7. He self funded tons of commercials for months, including an endorsement from his Dem wife.

Wifey came across as genuine and friendly. He had three or four other soft focus ads with ordinary folks praising him. They were really, really good ads, with lots and lots of airtime. Quinn couldn't come close to matching that.
