' The Oceti Sakowin Community Academy is allowing youth to reclaim knowledge and culture taken from their ancestors.
The faces of over a dozen first-grade students light up as theyre asked to sing the ABCs in Lakota, eager to show off the language skills theyve learned at the Oceti Sakowin Community Academy.
At this school, Lakota language and culture arent an afterthought or addition to the schools curriculum, its what the curriculum revolves around. Now, as the school makes its way through its second year, staff and administrators continue to Indigenize learning.
The Oceti Sakowin Community Academy first opened its doors September 2022, marking itself as Rapid Citys first Indigenous-led school. In addition to lessons in math, social studies, and reading, students learn Lakota stories, many of which were almost forgotten after the boarding school era. . .
Oceti Sakowin Community Academy is part of a larger network of schools, the NACA (Native American Community Academy) Inspired Schools Network. A majority of schools are in New Mexico. Local community members such as Bowman wondered how this initiative could be brought back to Rapid City.'>>>

(1,424 posts)... that has been inflicted upon the original inhabitants of this country is unforgivable. ANY politicians from any state with a significant indigenous population that dares to stand in the way of reparations or any form of recompense for the perverted horrors that were deliberately mandated by the U.S. government should be dismissed from their positions with extreme prejudice, never to hold ANY office ever again.
Nowhere near enough has been invested in making reservations livable, or giving native children anything and everything they need to learn how to make good lives for themselves within their communities and within their country.
The colonialism that Europeans practiced is a foul stain on Caucasian heritage that will never be erased, even by the conservative whitewashing that is such a popular tactic in Republican-led states today.
Perhaps a massive, never ending GoFundMe campaign could be administered by someone with the honor and integrity of a Jimmy Carter. Republicans need not apply, unless it's to make a gigantic monetary contribution; they've done enough harm.
