Very strange indeed. What's going on here? More than meet the eye, I suspect. Very curious.

The remarks came during a heated debate on a resolution regarding the American Federation of Teachers’ continued support of Common Core despite the union’s disappointment in how it was rolled out nationwide.

“I’ve heard the stories about how Eli Broad, Bill Gates, Joel Klein and a flying saucer full of Martians designed these things to brainwash us all,” said Mulgrew, mocking critics who deride Common Core as being imposed by billionaires and corporate bigwigs.

2. He appears to have weathered the storm about his sister's graft better than I would have expected.

3. There WAS no storm.

There was an apparent consensus that it wouldn't be covered. So only the original NY Post reporter covered it ( a total of twice... near as I can tell) and then as if by mutual agreement it seemed to be declared off-limits. Only a handful of bloggers went near it after that.

Perhaps the above is the price we have to pay. Part of the arrangement? Who knows. But that's the only scenario that makes any sense.

The membership seems to be overwhelmlngly opposed to it but the leadership supports it to the point where it ( they) get emotionally unhinged when challenged on the subject.

He runs again in two years. Doesn't seem to matter. The UFT/AFT is set-up to reelect the ruling caucus nominee. Ms Weingarten was just reelected w. 97% of the vote.

I'd no idea she was that popular. I just talk to teachers... so what do I know? Maybe she should consider running for pope.

4. I noticed that. And how is it that the leadership feels they can support it when the membership

doesn't? The fix is in. They have been bought.

Which pretty much means we are doomed.

5. Hard to say. I think this NY Federal Prosecutor makes *everyone* in the NYC political class ...

nervous. I would include the union leadership in the "political class".

People like that have a tendency to overreach. Maybe even a subconscious desire to get caught.

I don't think the politicians per se are going to be much help in reforming the unions. But the court system *might* be.

6. Good commentary here tying the two ends together:

We can't get into Mulgrew's brain and find out exactly what brought about the violent imagery in that speech, but we do know that Mulgrew and his family have stood to gain from support for education reforms in the past.

For example, the NY Post reported the following in April of 2013:

The sister of teachers-union president Michael Mulgrew is under investigation for failing to disclose she managed a company that raked in $39.6 million in public-school contracts while she was on an 11-year child-care leave from her city teaching job, The Post has learned.

Kathleen Mulgrew-Daretany, 40, was an English teacher at Lafayette HS in Brooklyn for less than five years with a $56,707 salary. She left in 2001 on maternity and>>>>>

7. That is interesting. And it makes me wonder why his sister would leave a COO job of a company

that is making millions (in graft, it sounds like) to take a $75K a year job back at the DOE. I bet there is something we are not seeing there too.

The description of her new job is that she is studying how schools help students prepare for college and careers. That seems to me to be an area ripe for more billion dollar testing opportunities for the testing companies.

I hate that the Post is the only large media outlet that is covering this, and that it is not something that the rank and file teachers are not up in arms about. There is not chance of turning things around with this grifter running things.

8. I'm past trying to figure out why these people do the things they do.

I just assume that when you're dealing with the local (UFT) here... you're in effect dealing with the employer. (NYC DOE).

It's impossible to figure out where one leaves off and the other begins. Ms. Daretany is a case in point.

If you call UFT for help... and they ignore your call or email.... THAT's your answer. That's the *employer* speaking.

Maybe it's different elsewhere. That's the way it is here.
