BOGOTA, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Colombia's majority state-owned energy company Ecopetrol plans to build a new green hydrogen plant at its refinery in the Caribbean city of Cartagena for some $28.5 million, it said in a statement on Monday.
The plant will produce 800 tonnes of green hydrogen a year, making it Latin America's biggest, Ecopetrol said in the statement.
Colombia's President Gustavo Petro has made weaning the Andean country off of fossil fuels a major goal of his administration and Ecopetrol - the country's biggest company - has previously announced plans to take part in an auction for planned offshore wind projects.
"Ecopetrol has entered the modern era of producing clean fuels," the company's chief executive Ricardo Roa said in the statement.

(34,752 posts)1. Ah, an oil company playing the good old Exxon hydrogen "bait and switch" bullshit game.
One of the fun things about thermodynamic illiterates hyping the hydrogen scam, is that they love to greenwash fossil fuels, right along with Exxon.
It's 2024. The hydrogen bullshit game is now half a century old.
Anyone with a modicum of education on the subject of scale would be unimpressed with another "largest hydrogen plant" that produces a little over 2 tons a day of hydrogen in an oil refinery that probably already makes much larger quantities of hydrogen already by reforming petroleum.
A Giant Climate Lie: When they're selling hydrogen, what they're really selling is fossil fuels.
As for the wind scam, it appears that the wind industry worldwide on this planet can't build wind turbines faster than they are falling apart. It grew 0 Exajoules between 2022 and 2023, or in the "percent talk" all of our "renewable energy will save us" cults like to use to obscure their indifference to the use of fossil fuels, 0%.
Table of EIA WEO Energy Sources in Exajoules, 2000, 2016-2023
I have every annual issue of the IEA's World Energy Outlook in my files going back to 2009, and in addition those of 1995, 2000, 2006, 2007.
From back issues of the World Energy Outlook, I have prepared the following table of data (as opposed to soothsaying, which the WEO always includes), showing changes in overall energy consumption by primary energy source type.
There have been changes, obviously, in the way energy is reported, for example, the useless solar and wind industries - useless in the sense that they have done zero, nada, zilch to slow extreme global heating - were reported combined in the 2000 edition as "other renewables..."
... Years ago, the table reported energy production in units of "MTOE," "million tons of oil equivalent," having switched to the SI unit Exajoule in recent years. In the table all numbers have been converted using the conversion factor 1 MTOE = 0.0419 EJ and are reported in EJ.
The table:
It should speak for itself.
