India’s First Hydrogen Train Begins Trial Run: Know The Route And What It Offers
India’s first hydrogen train begins trials on the Jind-Sonipat route. Running at 110 km/h, it offers zero emissions, high efficiency, and a step towards green transportation.
Vishvas News | 31 Mar 2025
India’s first hydrogen-powered train has commenced its trial run today on the 89-km-long Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. Manufactured by Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the eco-friendly train marks a significant step towards sustainable transportation. Capable of reaching speeds of 110 km per hour, the train consists of a passenger coach and two additional coaches dedicated to hydrogen storage.
A Leap Towards Green Rail Technology
The hydrogen train is powered by a 1,200-horsepower engine and can accommodate 2,638 passengers at a time. As part of Indian Railways’ green energy initiative, Rs. 2,800 crore has been allocated for the development of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains, positioning India among the world’s leading nations in hydrogen rail technology. Following a successful trial run, Indian Railways plans to introduce the train into regular service. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions and advancing the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.
Expanding Hydrogen Rail to Heritage and Hilly Routes
Under the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ project, Indian Railways is preparing to deploy 35 hydrogen trains on heritage and mountainous routes. The government has set aside ₹600 crore for infrastructure development, ensuring seamless hydrogen storage and refueling capabilities. "The project further establishes the commitment of Indian Railways towards advancements in alternative energy-powered train travel, thereby ensuring a cleaner and greener future for the country’s transportation sector,” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated in the Rajya Sabha.
Cutting-Edge Features and Environmental Benefits
Hydrogen trains run on fuel cells that generate electricity while emitting only water and heat, making them an eco-friendly alternative to diesel-powered locomotives. Each train is estimated to cost Rs 80 crore, and once fully operational, India will join an elite group of nations—including Germany, China, and the UK—that have embraced hydrogen rail technology.
Key benefits of hydrogen trains include:
Zero carbon emissions: These trains release only water vapor, significantly reducing pollution.
Energy efficiency: Hydrogen fuel cells offer a more energy-efficient alternative to fossil fuels...more

Thanks for posting this!
I'm sure that my son will ride this train one day since he'll be traveling to India at least once a year.
