30 dogs are rescued from a South Korean meat farm and brought to San Diego

Thirty Korean dogs and puppies that otherwise might have been someone's dinner are getting a new lease on life this week after Humane Society officials rescued the canines and brought them to San Diego.

The animals had been living in crowded and filthy cages at a South Korean meat farm when they were rescued through a program sponsored by Humane Society International, San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Stacy Archambault said.

Many of the dogs — which range from 6 months to 2 years old and include golden retrievers, huskies and Korean mastiffs — had lived in cages all their lives. They were subjected to daily cruelty and had very little food or veterinary care, Archambault said. Many suffered from malnutrition and disease.

The dogs were flown to San Francisco and picked up by Humane Society personnel, who brought them to San Diego for medical treatment. Many were afraid, Archambault said, and were being given time to adjust to their new surroundings. (more at link)

I adopted a mastiff puppy from another Korean meat farm rescue last year. I'm so thankful HSI is doing this work.

edit: Minor factual problem in the article: the mastiffs are Japanese Mastiffs (Tosa Inu) not Korean Mastiffs as the article states. Korean Mastiffs are wrinkly, furry dogs. Tosas are short haired dogs that look like a cross between an English Mastiff and a Great Dane and are the most common dog in Korean dog meat farms.

2. He's doing pretty well.

He's still fearful of strangers and new situations, but over time he's come out of his shell. At first he only wanted to be around me, and now he's comfortable with my whole family. He knows a few commands. I'm still working on getting him to walk on a leash. He'll do fine in my yard but he really doesn't want to leave my yard and go anywhere. He's got a good spot and he's staying. Eventually he'll figure out that we're always going to come back.

Health wise he's doing beautifully. I don't know how much weight he's put on, but he was 11 mos when I adopted him and was underweight (at 95 lbs) I guess I'll find out next month at his checkup how much he weighs now but he's definitely a bigger and more solid looking dog, and doesn't look bony anymore.
