At restaurants such as Superiority Burger in New York City, veggie burgers have achieved gourmet status, and fast food chains are getting onboard, too. Wendys is test-marketing a black bean burger thats getting thumbs-up for great taste, and White Castle last year added a veggie slider to its menu.
Clearly, veggie burgers are having a moment. According to a 2015 survey from market research firm Mintel, 25 percent of Americans say meatless burgers are on the menu more than once per month; many eat them several times weekly.

(28,687 posts)I don't care for mushrooms, and too many companies put them in. I also find black beans too heavy for burgers, so I look forward to more choices.

(28,687 posts)I don't understand your "hint". If mushrooms are listed, I don't buy them. Therefore, more choices are a good thing for me! I like eating veggie burgers.

(3,580 posts)2 years ago there were enough of us to convince the hospital to put vegan items on the menu for staff and patients. Prior to that on a good day we could get a salad and maybe a bowl of green beans.
Even people who eat meat are cutting back and like the option.

(20,234 posts)I'm not a vegetarian, I just felt like having them even though I also have turkey burgers in my freezer. I'm the people in that article.
I do feel good anyway about switching to the veggie option for burgers on a regular basis (we have them about once a week lately), and I've done some homemade ones with pumpkin and beans that were excellent. I was thinking of making up a large batch of them with arugula mixed in and freezing them. (Mainly because I have a frightening amount of dried pumpkin powder and fresh arugula in my house.)

As for the article, I'll have to look at my latest copy of CR and see if that's in it. I haven't read that one yet. Daiya brand has done the best with fake meats and cheese, in my opinion. I haven't tried their burgers (if they make them) mostly because I kind of stopped eating burger type meals. I tend to make stir-fry, stews, or soup, with some homemade bread. Easier to eat and reheat leftovers.
