Ten of the 32 lawmakers from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus Likud party, including a cabinet minister, announced on Wednesday that they will be participating in a conference tagged Preparing to Resettle Gaza scheduled for next week in the Gaza border region close to Sderot.
A year after the pogroms (of October 7), we will stand together Likud members, regional [Likud] branch chairs, MKs and ministers to jointly declare that Gaza is ours. Forever,' a poster advertising the October 21 event read.
Victory is settlement. It is doable added a message on a Gaza settlement WhatsApp channel where it announced the participation of nearly one-third of the Likud faction Knesset members.
The Likud legislators set to participate are Social Equality Minister MK May Golan and MKs Avichay Buaron, Sasson Guetta, Tally Gotliv, Eli Dallal, Nissim Vaturi, Hanoch Milwidsky, Ariel Kallner, Kati Shitrit and Osher Shkalim.
The event in which relatives of some of the Gaza hostages will participate along with bereaved families and families of active duty soldiers is being organized by the Nachala Settlement Movement organization, which advocates for Jewish settlement in the West Bank where it has helped establish illegal settlement outposts.
Nachala organized another conference in January, which also advocated for the reestablishment of Israeli settlements in Gaza in addition to encouraging voluntary emigration of Palestinians out of the Strip. The gathering was attended by over two dozen ministers and lawmakers.
Other organizers of the event next week include the far-right Otzma Yehudit party headed by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and the youth chapter of the far-right Religious Zionism party led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
Smotrich and Ben Gvir are expected to attend the conference, along with Otzma Yehudit Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the idea of Israeli civilians resettling Gaza. But critics fear the premiers prosecution of the war could lead in that direction, pointing to the latest military operations in northern Gaza, which have included mass evacuation orders and little to no humanitarian aid allowed in for nearly two weeks. Israel says it is trying to prevent the revival of Hamas in the area and that there are no ulterior motives for the north Gaza operation.
The US has spoken out against the resettlement of Gaza, and included that stance in one of its principles for the post-war management of Gaza. The Biden administration also called the messaging of the previous Nachala-led conference inflammatory and irresponsible.

(4,307 posts)On Sunday, we woke up to the news that six Israeli hostages were executed by Hamas, just before soldiers reached them in a tunnel in Gaza. Another six, added to tens of thousands of people in this land who should not have died over the past year. During this week, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets. They feel angry, desperate and betrayed by their government. They have understood, perhaps for the first time, that the Israeli government does not want to return the hostages in a deal, but to continue the war indefinitely. They see that the occupation and the settlements matter more than human life - and not only of Palestinians, said B'Tselem Executive Director Yuli Novak, who addressed the UN Security Council last night (Wednesday) . BTselem - the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories was invited by the Slovenian President of the Security Council to provide an expert review of the state of human rights in Israel/Palestine following the war.
Novak added Since the criminal Hamas-led attack on October 7th, I and every Israeli I know have been living in deep anxiety. The government is cynically exploiting our collective trauma to violently advance its project of cementing Israeli control over the entire land. To do that, it is waging war on the entire Palestinian people, including committing war crimes almost daily.

We came here with one clear purpose: to settle the entire Gaza Strip. That was the declaration of Israeli settler leader Daniella Weiss at a gathering of hundreds of right-wing Israelis near Gaza on Monday, where they celebrated the Jewish festival of Sukkot by calling to erect settlements inside the besieged enclave.
This was not the biggest event of the past year to promote that demand: in January, thousands of Israelis attended a major conference in Jerusalem, including several government ministers and Knesset members; and in May, thousands marched in the city of Sderot and held a rally on a hill overlooking the Strip. It was also not the most forceful: back in March, right-wing activists broke through Erez Crossing and established a symbolic outpost before the army evicted them.
But this well-organized, calm, and joyous gathering which was approved and held against all logic in a closed military zone near the border, and was attended by several senior figures in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus Likud party marked a new step in the effort to mainstream the idea of resettling Gaza with Jewish Israelis.
And while the Israeli government has repeatedly denied to U.S. officials that the army is implementing the so-called Generals Plan to besiege, starve, and expel the residents of northern Gaza before annexing the territory to Israel, it was evident that participants in Mondays event were counting on such a plan to cleanse the area for Jewish settlement. According to the UN, there are hundreds of thousands of Palestinians still in northern Gaza but several participants spoke as if the area were nearly empty.

(1,982 posts)Israeli linguistics professor Idan Lando has a blog called "Don't die Stupid" where he is collecting evidence from "non-Hamas sources" about what is happening in north Gaza. It should be a must-read for Israel's apologists and denialists.
There is no bottom to what Israel is willing to inflict on those defenceless, starved Palestinians, in pursuit of cleansing Gaza for the settlers. Since I read it this morning, I am in a state of shock and agitation. I don't understand how this is allowed to continue. Humanity is sleeping, or turning a blind eye. Or it could just be the imposed black-outs and banning of foreign journalists so these crimes against humanity can be done under the cover of darkness.

Some excerpts:
Contrary to the presentation created by the IDF, as if the residents of the northern Gaza Strip were free to move south and leave the danger zone, the testimonies of the residents painted a startling picture - those who try to evacuate, those who just leave their homes - are shot by IDF snipers or drones, as confirmed by the Doctors Without Borders team " in Jabaliya. Moreover, rescue teams that tried to save people who were shot by snipers - were also shot . On October 9, IDF snipers targeted and hit this girl, IDF drones also targeted and hit and killed white flag bearers. "Quadcopter drones fly low over the streets, shooting at everything that moves," testified a resident of Jablia, "snipers are stationed on the roofs, and aim at anyone who tries to leave. At the same time, soldiers and tanks entered the camp, destroying houses and flattening roads and fields." . A particularly horrifying video circulated on October 19 shows a boy in the northern Gaza Strip who was wounded by sniper fire, lying down and waving for help. Little by little young men approach him, none of them armed, to check his condition. When about 12 people gather there, a missile hits the group and kills them.
This is the reality in which the residents of the Gaza Strip, exhausted and starving, were required to walk into the "humanitarian zone".
....
Hunger from the first day
....
On October 10, Israel shelled the only flour warehouse in northern Gaza. It was not reported before or after that Hamas terrorists were hiding among the loaves of bread. The shelling of a flour warehouse is a school example of a war crime and a significant link in the case against Israel for genocide. On October 14, the IDF shelled a UN food distribution center in Jabaliya, killing 10 people. On October 19, Israel killed four engineers and Oxfam workers who were on their way to repair water infrastructure in the village of Khoza (in the southeast of the Strip, and still relevant to the hunger and thirst policy).
All the aid agencies warn in the harshest terms about the unfolding disaster, warning that they are unable to fulfill their basic role in the impossible conditions that Israel has created in northern Gaza. A new IPC report on the hunger situation in Gaza predicts "catastrophic consequences" for severe malnutrition, especially in the northern Gaza Strip.
So much more.... the "Champions' Plan" is a blueprint for ethnic cleansing. And the reality of its implementation is even worse.

Does he genuinely believe that if Netanyahu says he "doesn't intend to allow any resettlement in Gaza," then that's it, the prime minister won't allow it? As though any of the messianists are asking Netanyahu, or if Netanyahu's word has any value or meaning anyway. Today he won't allow it; tomorrow, it will depend on what his political interests are
The Left are on the margins but so are the messianic madmen that dream of returning to Gush Katif .
