(2,809 posts)Visiting my older brother who taught ESL classes in Texas to a large percentage of Iran and Iraqi's on student visas in 1976, after I had been recently and violently "outed" in my small, wildly religious midwestern hometown, I took refuge that summer in his city prior to returning to more homophobic events and running away to Cali. I'd pick him up after those summer classes in his car, circumstantially. (LOL even though I didn't have a driver's license yet. I just don't think that occurred to him and I didn't volunteer the info)
I came out to him, it wasn't surprising he took that well, and along with other older siblings, ribbed at me: "You finally figured that out". But in his case he warned me not to be open at all around his students, precautionarily, due to very staunch homophobia from those students that had led to serious incidents on his campus. the University booted the violence instigators and they got deported... and the remainder were mad about that.
