Rep. Steven Haugaard, Gov. Kristi Noem's primary challenger, is hoping to ban the use of drugs commonly used in medical abortions and to set penalties for violators of the potential law.
The measure narrowly passed the House Health and Human Services committee early Thursday with a 7-6 vote. The bill has a list of 10 co-sponsors with Haugaard as the primary bill sponsor.
A chemical abortion drug is defined in the bill text as "mifegyne, mifeprex, mifepristone, and any other pharmaceutically equivalent drug."
A new section would classify the performance or attempt of an abortion using any chemical drug and the dispensing, distributing, distributing, manufacturing, prescribing, selling or transferring any chemical abortion drug as a class 6 felony.
