Woman paraded naked: A familiar headline in India
27 December 2023
By Geeta Pandey
BBC News, Delhi
Earlier this month, a woman was stripped and paraded naked in India, sparking outrage. It's a depressingly familiar headline, but legal experts and gender rights activists say the law is still not equipped to deal with such heinous crimes against women.
It was sometime after 1am on 11 December when more than a dozen people barged into Sasikala's [not her real name] house.
The 42-year-old was dragged out, stripped and paraded naked around the village, tied to an electricity pole and beaten for hours.
A resident of Hosa Vantamuri village in Belagavi district in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, she was being punished because her 24-year-old son had eloped with his 18-year-old girlfriend.

These are just some cases that made headlines, but there's a general lack of data on such incidents. Some cases get politicised, with opposition parties raising them to embarrass a state government. But activists say women often do not report these crimes because of fear of insensitive questioning by the police and in courts.

(53,041 posts)I know there will be those who say that's crazy. They're wrong. And that is proven dozens of times every day.
Don't miss the fact that this was done to this woman because of the actions of her son, not herself.

... to denigrate half their population in order to salve the egos of weak, venal men are doomed to failure, and deservedly so.
Hide-bound tradition and mindless adherence to religious dogma invariably written and enforced by weak, venal men, expressly for the benefit of weak, venal men assures the disintegration of these diseased societies because they steadfastly refuse learn from the grotesque mistakes of their predecessors. They follow blindly because it's easier than thinking, and they believe they are absolved of any responsibility for their actions because the imaginary Sky Daddy of their choice told them it is not only permitted, it is mandatory.
They are left further and further behind more enlightened societies, and wallow in their myriad resentments until they self-destruct, sadly, taking with them the lives of untold millions of innocents.
There is usually a fatal dichotomy in such societies. Enlightened, forward-thinking men and women striving to make their little part of the world better, and ignorant, semi-literate troglodytes that hate anything they haven't the intellectual capacity to understand. They want to destroy everything, and malicious creatures that delight in manipulating them to their own nefarious ends, egg them on until they explode with wanton rage and do things like attack the Capitol like rabid hyenas.
Sound like anyone we know?
The aforementioned malicious creatures have packed the courts with like-minded sociopaths determined to pervert the rule of law to enable evil people to seize power by whatever means necessary, so a certain treasonous Orange Gargoyle can wreak havoc on those of us who refused to bend the knee and lavish undeserved adulation on, and unquestioning loyalty to, one of the vilest creatures a broken society ever defecated.
Whew! End of rant.

(3,712 posts)That was the outrage, that a woman said "no thanks" to being betrothed to someone she clearly didn't wish to be around let alone marry.
