The message threatened to rain gunfire and shrapnel upon a lecture by Sarkeesian, who created a feminist video blog and a video series on misogyny in video games. She was scheduled to speak at 11:30 a.m. at the Taggart Student Center Auditorium.
"A Montreal Massacre style attack will be carried out," warned the message, sent to multiple departments and individuals around campus. "I have at my disposal a semi-automatic rifle, multiple pistols, and a collection of pipe bombs."
After consulting with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, the university decided to host Sarkeesians lecture as scheduled, said USU spokesman Tim Vitale. The university planned to increase security for the lecture and forbid backpacks in the auditorium.
However, they wouldnt forbid guns."

(7,822 posts)how do you allow guns at an event where a shooting has been threatened?!? Wtf?!? I hope whoever made the threat gets charged. This shit needs to be taken seriously. It's terrorism, even if the asshat has no intention/ability to carry it out. The threat itself is an act of terror, and sadly worked in this case.

(9,126 posts)Go guns! This woman has a right to speak. She has a right to feel safe. Nothing should trump those rights. I am very sorry the university is so fucking stupid.

Even with a carry permit, carrying a concealed firearm is not allowed in any church that notifies the State of Utah and makes public notice. A church must, by state law, make annual notice of this intent to prohibit firearms from their "houses of worship". The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, prohibits the carrying of firearms in its "houses of worship"; they have current notice posted on the Utah Dept of Public Safety's website. Prohibition of firearms from "houses of worship" does not necessarily include all property owned by the church. However, firearms are prohibited at all Church-owned colleges (LDS Business College and Brigham Young University) and office buildings. Church campsites also prohibit weapons.
Utah State University??? That's not an institution for the blessed. Fire when ready, Gridley.

(401 posts)is a big thing in most cult-like religions. Like, say, the Amish.
But it would be a wonderful thing if all progressive folk shunned bigot-ridden states like Utah and Idaho and Wyoming and refused to spend a dime in them until the shame got through to the population, that they were considered ludicrous.
Money, and it's nonappearance, may change more minds than sane reasonng.
