(CNN) — A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that kratom was a cause of death in nearly 100 people over a 17-month period -- a higher number than previously reported.

The CDC analyzed reports of more than 27,000 unintentional drug overdoses across 32 states and Washington, D.C.

The study said 152 of those people were found to have kratom in their system, and the drug was a cause of death for 91 of them.

Earlier this year, the US Food and Drug Administration said that 44 deaths had been associated with the drug.

At low doses, kratom acts like a stimulant. At higher doses, it sedates dulling pain -- which has made it a popular over-the-counter remedy for opioid withdrawal.

The over-the-counter herbal drug kratom has been linked to an increasing number of overdose deaths, federal health officials said this week.

What is kratom?

Kratom is a plant grown naturally in Southeast Asian countries including Thailand and Malaysia, where it's been widely used for centuries. It's sold as a powder, typically in capsules, that can be used in tea to ease opioid withdrawals as well as fatigue, pain, coughing and diarrhea.

In the United States, the herbal supplement is typically purchased at smoke shops, gas stations or online.

And its use is increasing in popularity, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

2. No deaths in thousands of years of use until Americans use it

Big pharma doesn't like it. Kratom was found "along with other substances". The same could be said for aspirin mixed with heroin.

3. Kratom often helps those addicted to opiates get off of them. It has an array

of other uses, pain, anxiety and it even has some anti depressant properties. I find this story hard to believe, I have taken it on and off. I personally would not be able to keep it down if I took to much.
Pharmaceutical companies have been pushing to outlaw it nationwide for years. It is illegal in, I believe 7 states.
It has saved many lives and made the lives manageable for those that were hooked on far more dangerous drugs.

Notice the word 'a' as opposed to 'the' here.

And how many of those people OD'd on purpose, any clue?

Important to note is that it's a mild mu opioid receptor agonist, meaning it's essentially mild opioid-like drug, which leads many people to use it get off of harder stuff. But guess what? Getting off hard dope is a BITCH, and people kill themselves while in the throes of withdrawals ALL THE TIME.

So this number, w/o a corresponding count of how many are suspected suicides ... means very little.

6. Psych NP here that is also a detox nurse

Over the last 2-3 years, we have seen a rise in the number of patients addicted to Kratom that end up needing to detox from Kratom at my facility. There is a lot of misinformation out there. I am not here to tell anyone to stop using it. All I can tell is what I have treated. Increasing numbers of people addicted to it, needing to detox from it. So obviously, not as harmless a substance as it is touted on some internet sources.
