This biotech startup thinks it can delay menopause by 15 years. That would transform women’s lives

The ovary is the central command system of a woman’s endocrine system, controlling the hormones that send signals to essentially all of the other organs in the body. It’s a powerful force, impacting everything from immune function to metabolism to heart health. But it’s been the ovary’s fate to be pigeonholed as a solely reproductive organ.

To Piraye Beim, that’s a missed opportunity—and one she is looking to capitalize on. “The ovary isn’t just about babies,” says the founder and CEO of biotech startup Celmatix.

In fact, says Beim, “the real moonshot is menopause control.” The biotech CEO is helping to pioneer and define a new category that is attempting to expand ovarian health beyond fertility issues, which includes tackling painful conditions for women like endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.

What woman wants to be fussing with birth control and/or worry about getting pregnant up to age 60 and beyond. This is insane.

Men will have to start stepping up with the vasectomies ….

Most of my reproductive problems went away at menopause. I was waiting for it for years, I saw it as a kind of parole from a life sentence of discomfort and subjugation on many levels.

5. Me too. Not only that, my allergies and my tendency to get frequent and horrible

sinus infections went away too. I'd get 4 or 5 a year before menopause, all with high fevers and lots of misery. None since.

I swear I had endometrial tissue in my sinuses.

Peri-menopausal problems in my late 30s that accumulated over the years and finished off with frequent, debilitating migraines. I had endometriosis my entire adult life.

That all went away when parole came.

the dystopian nightmares begin.

Cranking out little soldiers from the age of 12 to the age of what? 75? Factories. Yes I watch too many movies.

I do not trust anyone enough with this kind of control considering that they want someone who was raped or has ectopic pregnancies to carry to term, her life or death be damned.

Screw this crap! 15 more years of that?! 15 more years of paying the feminist tax to big corporations? 15 more years of mess and cramps and other associated pain? 15 more years of restricted activities for a week or more? 15 more years of worrying about pregnancy? 15 more years of worrying about raising a child til your 90 or older?

Not until men carry an appropriate share of the burden. No more Viagra. No more Cialis. No more whatever comes after them. Not until the patriarchy is torn limb from limb and the christofascists are consigned to the dustbin of history. Period. Amen. So mote it be.

More years of expensive birth control and period products? No thanks. Not to mention the chance of pregnancy. I seriously doubt many women would want this. Freedom from menopause symptoms yes, but delaying menopause, no thank you.

17. Ugh, what a concept

and I don't expect it to work much better than HRT did, even if it keeps estrogen levels from falling off a cliff. There's a reason we go through menopause and it has as much to do with estrogen mediated cancers as anything else. It's not just ending the monthly mess we had to deal with, it's a longevity thing.

Only two species go through menopause, humans and orcas. In orcas, any female old enough to achieve menopause becomes a leader of her pod. In humans, post menopausal women are generally despised as being useless to men.

Women under 40 seem to want to stay fresh and dewy forever. Women over 55 who are through all the nasty symptoms of having their internal environment change so radically know they wouldn't go back to that for all the money in the world. Well, unless they're trophy wives desperate to hang onto a doddering old man in the hope he'll croak and she'll be a rich widow instead of another discarded wife.

I can see this being a good line of research for women who have had hysterectomies at young ages, and I've seen a case of uterine cancer in a 12 year old girl This would be life saving for them. For the rest of us, nah.

No woman wants to extend all that goes along with extending this aspect of life. They want it done and gone.
