0:00
and it is time now for patella like it
0:02
is where Dr Lok Patel shares Health
0:03
advice on the topics that matter most to
0:05
you today he's talking celiac disease
0:08
the American Journal of gastroenterology
0:10
says cases of celiac are on the rise
0:12
according to the CDC celiac disease is a
0:15
serious autoimmune condition that
0:16
creates an inflammation damaging the
0:18
lining of the small intestine when you
0:20
eat gluten here's Dr Patel with
0:22
everything you need to know during the
0:24
Celiac Awareness Month
0:27
you've probably seen gluten-free bread
0:30
waffles spaghetti even makeup because
0:32
over the past decade gluten-free foods
0:35
and products have seen in almost
0:36
Celebrity Status boost in marketing and
0:39
for people with the gluten related
0:40
medical condition like celiac disease
0:42
these options are amazing but for others
0:44
without a condition some still think no
0:47
no gluten is bad others don't so what's
0:49
the deal well may is celiac disease
0:52
awareness month so here are seven things
0:53
to know about gluten and celiac disease
0:56
the word gluten actually comes from a
0:58
Latin word which means glue cool I
1:00
didn't know that gluten is a group of
1:02
naturally occurring storage proteins
1:03
found in certain foods that give it
1:05
qualities like shape and texture a lot
1:07
of foods contain gluten especially foods
1:10
that contain the big three wheat barley
1:12
or rye that includes deliciousness like
1:15
pasta noodles Breads and crackers and
1:17
there's other food that has hidden
1:18
gluten it may not be as obvious like
1:20
soup can
1:21
salad dressing surveys estimate that up
1:24
to 20 to 30 percent of Americans try to
1:26
avoid gluten sometimes it's because of a
1:29
medical condition other times it's
1:31
because of a perceived health benefit
1:32
only about one percent of Americans have
1:35
celiac disease but possibly more of
1:37
another form of a gluten intolerance or
1:40
sensitivity celiac disease is a genetic
1:42
condition in which if you eat gluten
1:44
your immune system will be targeted
1:46
leading to potential damage and
1:48
inflammation in your small intestine and
1:50
this can cause symptoms like pain
1:52
bloating nausea vomiting and more
1:54
long-term complications can include
1:56
conditions like weight loss malnutrition
1:58
joint problems delay puberty anemia even
2:01
liver issues in rare cases and the only
2:03
treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet
2:06
for diagnosis a doctoral first asks you
2:09
some questions and then conduct a
2:10
physical exam and if needed get blood
2:13
tests and potentially Imaging and a
2:15
biopsy of your gut which is not as scary
2:17
as it sounds and lastly avoiding gluten
2:20
if you don't have a medical reason to is
2:21
necessarily a good thing gluten-free
2:24
foods may be lower in protein magnesium
2:27
iron fiber Vitamin B and other nutrients
2:30
and higher in preservative saturated fat
2:32
and sugar repeat after me gluten is not
2:36
a villain unless you have a serious
2:37
medical condition so repeat after me
2:39
again when in doubt talk to a doctor and
2:41
please do not self-diagnose a gluten
2:43
intolerance sensitivity or anything for
2:45
that matter
2:47
all right Dr alok Patel joins me now for
2:50
more on this Dr Patel what are some
2:53
other gluted gluten related medical
2:55
conditions because you can have an
2:57
intolerance without necessarily having
2:59
celiac disease right
3:01
absolutely Diane you know according to
3:03
experts and Celiac awareness campaigns
3:06
about one percent of Americans have
3:07
celiac disease but there are another
3:09
entire broad category of these
3:12
non-celiac related gluten
3:14
insensitivities and intolerances like
3:15
for example about five to six percent of
3:18
Americans may have a non-celiac gluten
3:21
sensitivity but there are some other
3:22
conditions as well that people may have
3:24
such as a wheat allergy and these can
3:27
present in a similar way with intestinal
3:29
or GI problems if you eat gluten there's
3:31
also something called gluten Ataxia
3:33
which is neurologic symptoms associated
3:35
with eating gluten usually comes up
3:37
later in life and even a skin condition
3:39
dermatitis herpetiformis which is a rash
3:41
associated with consuming gluten which
3:43
is often found in people with heal like
3:45
disease so yes this is a broad category
3:47
which is why it's important if you have
3:49
any type of issues associated with
3:51
eating particular foods that you seek
3:53
medical care now you mentioned that in
3:57
obvious sources of gluten gluten is in a
3:59
lot of things and some of it is not very
4:02
clear so how do you avoid gluten if you
4:05
do have a sensitivity to it
4:07
you know it's not as easy as just having
4:09
a magnifying lens and looking at it and
4:11
this is why a lot of people out there
4:12
who have celiac disease or gluten
4:14
tolerance really need to know how to be
4:16
a sleuth at identifying gluten because
4:18
guess what if you're out at a farmer's
4:20
market restaurant or friend's house
4:21
there's not always a nice clean label so
4:23
the first thing you want to do is yes
4:24
try to see if it says gluten free on a
4:26
label the FJ has a definition of
4:29
gluten-free but it is not required if
4:30
you have this on food products so you
4:32
want to make sure you also then know
4:33
what ingredients are likely to contain
4:34
gluten including allergen statements
4:36
know which foods are naturally
4:38
gluten-free such as fruits vegetables
4:39
and legumes and when in doubt ask for
4:42
gluten-free options Diane this is why a
4:43
lot of people carry their own food with
4:45
them if they have a serious illness uh
4:47
to prepare
4:50
the other day and realize at the last
4:51
second that one of the ingredients that
4:53
I had put in had gluten in it without me
4:55
realizing it so luckily I caught it but
4:58
I just you know sometimes interrogating
5:00
people it's not rude it's just you
5:01
looking out for yourself because they
5:03
may not even realize that they put
5:04
gluten in the recipe
5:05
compassionate Chef exactly
5:08
um and you mentioned that people
5:09
shouldn't self-diagnose a gluten
5:11
intolerance why not why not I just avoid
5:14
it as a precaution
5:15
you know I understand the Temptation too
5:17
but there's two big issues here is
5:18
number one if you have a serious medical
5:20
condition that you haven't identified
5:22
there might be some long-term
5:23
complications or some lifestyle changes
5:25
that you could make to better suit your
5:27
outcome if you have a good diagnosis and
5:29
also we don't want to villainize gluten
5:31
itself because there are some
5:33
opportunities to get some good nutrition
5:34
as well as excuse me the fact that
5:37
gluten foods can be accessible and
5:39
affordable there's whole grains out
5:41
there that are heart healthy because
5:42
they have fiber you also can get iron
5:44
calcium types of Vitamin B and protein
5:46
yes obviously gluten-free foods include
5:49
categories like fruits and vegetables
5:50
which we want everyone to eat but hey
5:52
focus on having a complete healthy diet
5:54
rather than just saying I'm going to
5:56
avoid this one product because I think
5:57
that's what I should do all right Dr
5:59

I've had a series of blood tests that show signs of anemia on top of diabetes. I've made an appointment with my physician to attempt to determine the cause, but my symptoms and the description of the disease are in almost total agreement.

I know a family that is way healthier because one person pushed and pushed on gluten free diet.
i might know 1-2 more such families
