I had surgery 9 years ago done by a grumpy old Doctor. He was grumpy but he fixed what ailed me. He was concerned about my blood pressure upon my discharge. Doesn’t everyone have blood pressure issues while staying in a hospital? He told me:
MOVE EVERY DAY AND WHEN YOU THINK YOU’VE MOVED ENOUGH MOVE SOME MORE
Simple, free, effective
Another motivating thought: sitting is to the spine what cancer is to the lungs.
Cheers to good health for all.

Good post, and kudos to that doc. There are lots of ways to get in some movement, too. I’m in a Tai Chi class and have learned some simple Qigong exercises that can be done to take a break from sitting or while standing in line, etc. Also, slightly bending the knees instead of locking them when standing has huge benefits for joint and leg muscle strength.

(41,770 posts)As long as you’re clothed? Damn regulations.
And not bending your knees ain’t good while standing in the sun during a change of command ceremony.

(6,388 posts)We took a long trip this weekend to go to a memorial service - 800 miles round trip. Mom decided that she felt too weak in the knees, even walking with her rollator, so she is getting up a couple of times an hour and looping the inside of the house - 96 steps. She wants to take a mini-vacation after Easter.
When I grow up, I want to be my Mom!

(41,770 posts)When the weather keeps me inside I walk in the basement or the garage. I have either NPR or Jimmy Buffet or some old time rock and roll cranked up on my CD. If I’m watching TV I get up and walk during every commercial. It’s almost an addiction. My wife is a 72 year old gym rat. We’re trying to hang around awhile.

(859 posts)best advice I ever got decades ago was about smoking. She said to me 'You have the ability to change .... there are others who never have that chance.'
Thanks and stay well

(15,589 posts)You nailed it.. Well not the Facebook thing, but sadly Netflix yes.
I don’t make excuses about it. Otoh I am not doing much about it either..I really should. I find that the workout time comes out of my work time never my Netflix time ;-/. But at least I have started reading more..proper books..not that foul Kindle thing.
On the plus side would you accept as an excuse that the rare shows that do make you actually laugh out loud count towards health ;-/?
No? No takers for laughter as medicine etc.? Oh well..thought I’d try..
I really do recommend Fisk and Santa Clarita Diet though. Especially Santa Clarita Diet..that is a good show. They always cancel the good ones.
Hi Skittles.

(163,008 posts)I get up and trot around when they are on!
or do this: walk, say, 1000 steps before you start your bingeing - AND after
small things like that can get you moving

(15,589 posts)I was running and using the elliptical relatively regularly up to ..actually come to think of it Jan 20th was the last day I exercised now that I recall.
Not that that’s an excuse. But that was the last time I worked out. I remember watching the inauguration after my nightly run. I don’t remember running or using the elliptical after that.
But that’s no excuse .

(163,008 posts)take a run within the next seven days! DO IT!!!!

(11,039 posts)Long ago, I noticed that, while it was cute that my cat would sleep on my lap every evening while I was on the computer, he would wake up all night and run around. So I started waking him to play throughout the evening and soon he slept through the night.
When I got my first dog 11 years ago, I kinda did the same. Took her for a nightly mile walk around 8pm after dinner. She has always slept through the night and I noticed I felt better if I walked after dinner also. So I always have done that since then.
I have two dogs now, and even if I don't really want to go out some days, they are my motivation to go. And it makes them really happy, which is a good bonus.

I have actually been letting it slide lately re physical activity, but I am trying to at least be more mentally active. Have completely tuned out the world more and more for obvious reasons and it’s working so far.
At least for now it’s a good bet. No good comes of reading the news lately.

(122 posts)A few years ago, when I was probably in my mid-40s, I was at my own doctor's office for a routine physical, and he gave me some very similar and unsolicited advice.
He said that through all his years of being a physician, one major factor above all others determined the future trajectory of a person's health. That factor was how much they kept moving. Being sedentary, he said, causes problems and exacerbates all others.

(41,770 posts)I’m on the brink of 71 and read much about health. Movement seems to be the thing to do in all its forms. I’m kinda obsessed. And I’m enjoying it. And have been for decades. I enjoyed your post. Doctors are great with their unsolicited but helpful advice.

(11,039 posts)I was fairly active, and five years ago when everything was closed up, I noticed within a few weeks that I felt like crap. My back hurt, and my knees.
I took my dog to run every morning, and spent 40 minutes walking up and down the stairs in our building. But the rest of the day I pretty much sat at my desk because there was nowhere to go and nothing was open.
I forget what, but I read something similar to your post and started setting a 20 minute timer every time I sat down. It's about a 200 step round trip from my office to the kitchen so I did 4 laps around my apartment meandering around the furniture. In a few days I was shocked how much better I felt. So I have kept that up.
When I travel and work out in the field, I do the same. Get up and walk around at a minimum.
