On Netflix: And Breathe Normally

This movie is from Iceland. It is about a single mother struggling financially who gets a job as a Border Guard at the airport in Reykjavík. This brings her into an unusual friendship with a West African woman fleeing violence in her home country and who is arrested at the airport with a forged passport. The main character, Lara, is the one responsible for Adja's arrest.

This is not the Iceland of travel magazines. There are no magnificent waterfalls, black beaches, or volcanoes. What there is however is a deep social commentary about ordinary people stuck in lives of struggle. It is a beautiful film about friendship, redemption, and how two women from different worlds come together to give each other the help each one needs.

I love Nordic films and television series. This is a great departure from the typical sad/divorced/outcast cop chasing down an evil killer. And Breathe Normally is a great film.

The subtitles are very well done. I watch so much television and movies in foreign languages that I am completely use to it.

Not the happiest film and a bit slow moving. Not for everyone, that's for sure. But I love indie gems like this one!
