Anyone watch "Dirty John"? It's about the Betty Broderick story.
It is not a documentary and they point this out. And it shows how Betty Broderick screwed herself multiple times and put herself and her craziness above her children's welfare. But I can't help but feel at this time that I'm glad she shot that shitty husband of hers.
At the trial there was a psychologist who talked about how infidelity can drive the other spouse mad and how, at least in her case the husband gaslighted her. During the first several years of their she did everything to help him become a big success and then after he became a big success and made a bunch of money he found a much younger version of her.
I'm still watching it so I haven't come to a complete conclusion yet but I wanted to post here to see if anyone else was watching it.
Edit: - I also just read that he changed his will before he died and specifically left off their oldest child. That sounds fairly shitty to me too. I don't think she was that old at the time.

(31,478 posts)but I have read about the case.
I have always felt that her husband drove Betty to do what she did. He as a selfish prick. She deserved to be punished for murder, but she should have been out of jail by now and living quietly somewhere.

(16,526 posts)I've seen other versions of this same story but I feel this one did a better job of highlighting the pure gaslighting that Dan did to Betty. I really do think this was a case of insanity. Divorce can drive people crazy but having one person be a lawyer themselves and know all the judges and know how to work this system is very unfair and lead to her despair. I wish both of them had been better people.
The other season features Debra Newell and John Meehan and is interesting because it plays out so much the same for many people.

(5,370 posts)She quoted that same psychologist regarding the gaslighting. No one validated Betty's feelings. Her friends weren't real friends, and none tried to comfort her, only told her to move on. She kept accusing Dan of having an affair, he kept telling her she was crazy, that she should seek help, and so on.
Stumbo says at one point in the book that Dan and Betty deserved each other, and I couldn't help agree with her. But there was one part of the book that made me wonder.
It's already been reported that a man alleged he'd been hired by Dan to kill Betty. Who knows if that's true? But there was also a couple who allege they met Betty and Dan while on vacation. Dan allegedly told the husband he planned to drive his wife crazy so he could have her put away and keep all his money.
Also, Dan, a Republican, planned to run for office. Had presidential ambitions. Wife No. 2 would give him more children, and he'd look Kennedyesque, so he told friends.

Me too! I was glad they got shot too. Only regret that they didn't show their faces when they realized it was her.
