I can't recommend Kanopy.com and Hoopla.com strongly enough. They're both free with your library card. I currently have 277 films in my kanopy queue and 95 in my Hoopla queue (seriously!). One of the keys is to look at the list of similar movies when you see one you like. The list go on seemingly forever. Especially great for indie flicks.

But wow have they disposed of books and media in house, at least where I'm at. Historical standards from the last 100 years are gone. New books, and I'm not impressed with the few I've read, abound, but the quality seems like everyone with a computer got something written during the pandemic. I wonder if we will have great authors anymore, or just niche writers supported by volume from libraries and Amazon.

9. My library's book section continues to shrink as video takes up more & more space.

They had a long wall of sci-fi/fantasy paperbacks. The collection was amazing! Then it was gone. Probably sold on their book sale day. They packed the remaining fiction into half the space so they could expand the video section. I know they have to change with the times, but half the library feels more like a video store than a library. If they had more documentaries I would be happier about it, but it's mostly popular movies/TV series.

I have been watching BBC production "Silent Witness" for weeks. I started watching this years ago on PBS. I picked it up in season 14 when I found Freevee, and am now on season 19. I think there are in excess of 20 seasons out there. Very enjoyable.

They have a section of "movies under 90 minutes" that has good content.

How does one make the movies play on my smart TV? I really am not that tech savvy.

12. My LG Smart TV has "apps" so had to add the Hoopla and Kanopy apps to the lineup

Then it works fine, asks for sign-in the usual way with a code you can use on the computer. I also have them on my Roku, so it works both ways (add as a channel on Roku). Once you sign in, you do not need to sign-in again.

On my TV took me awhile to figure it out -- had to find the Apps icon -- look up first how to do it on your specific TV brand and there are nearly always YouTube videos explaining pretty much everything you ever wanted to know.

21. Pluto is Paramount's app I think

with free and paid options.

On the free side the on demand is limited of course and the TV schedule plays shows out of sequence with a lot of repetition (but they do have Star Trek tng currently so I’m happy). Maybe they show new episodes every month. I found the app to be a bit glitchy.

I watch freevee (also glitchy) on Amazon Prime.

Commercials? Perfect time for light quick chores, lol!

LOVE your and all the other recommendations. Had to admit I didn’t even know what Roku was/is. There is only so much I can learn at a time.

Very sad about libraries getting rid of books. I know times change but to have a real book in your hands, that is a treasured gift for me.

29. i just dumped Amazon Fire for Roku

I had Roku in my office and now I ordered another one and it goes in my living room.

Fire is just too glitchy and slow.

Roku allows for easy playing of Kanopy and Hoopla.

I watched a very engaging movie on Hoopla two nights ago. I'm going to write up a post about it now. ("Breaking Habits"--about some "sisters" who have a medical marijuana business).
