I suppose the message embedded in that is at least 2-fold.
1) Be grateful for the days that are less similarly hard, and
2) Be thankful that today isn't as bad as the REALLY bad day whose hardness exceeds that experienced on SOME days.

and i do try to be grateful for the good days. or at least suck them dry of all the good.
and there are worse ones than today, but not by a whole lot. and the similarity to other days equally bad, from the same cause, makes for a hopelessness that is quite weighty.
