Reading through this story of one woman's infertility problems, I was struck by the thought that we would be better off eliminating fertility medicine and working harder to help people accept infertility and work through it. In other words, I think the author has been driven slightly mad by years of fertility treatments, miscarriages, and the psychological torture that accompanied her on her journey. I personally know someone who was very willing to kill herself trying to have a baby, and is alive now only because her husband called a halt. "I can live without a baby, but I can't live with you dying trying to have a baby."

(106,574 posts)psychological counseling should accompany it. Even possible group therapy where candidates learn the broad spectrum of experiences--including the potential for economic devastation or procedural failure. And, I think they should at least have alternatives discussed, including living a rich life while remaining childless, fostering, adopting.

Perhaps "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature" applies.

(17,498 posts)You might as well say we shouldn't allow anything stressful in our lives. Outlaw everything because it might make someone so stressful they will kill themselves.
The problem isn't ivf.
I have 3 wonderful adult kids, all conceived by ivf. We never thought of hurting ourselves or anyone else over the struggles with fertility.
You argument is dangerous. If you don't approve of ivf, don't undergo it. If you don't approve of abortion, don't have one. If you don't believe in cancer treatment, don't undergo any.
But don't make those decisions for anyone else.

What does absolutely amazes me is the total disregarded to the carrying capacity of earth. Watching Planet Earth Three and the total destruction of millions of acres of habitat, and carbon filtering oxygen generation plant life. Just to create space to grow cattle and chickens to feed the world. Burgers and wings!
My career was teaching ecology of Forest and wildlife management and every species of Plant and Animal that far exceeds its carrying capacity ends due to disease and starvation. We are running full speed into that scenario.
And to hear the likes of Tuberville and ignorant Space wizard followers as Rude Pundit calls them, ranting, We need babies, more and more babies. Yet do not give a Fuck about caring for them after womb. And now the anti vax crowd want to make them Petri dishes to be some vectors of disease.
I see our species headed to the same end as the many plants and animals I have studied about through history that succumb to over capacity, and many that have done so in my lifetime.
And an end due to starvation and rampant disease is not a pretty end, or a quick painless one. But earth will thrive without us.
