Related: About this forumI made my decision. I'm skipping Thanksgiving
It seems that the littlest things are overwhelming me, lately, so all of the activity could likely be a triggering mechanism. I'll probably spend part of the day cleaning the garage and the rest binge watching something. Not sure what.
Thanks to everyone for their input. I appreciate all of you more than I can ever say.

(35,999 posts)I go to my brothers about a 20 minute drive away and his wife and her brother are there. Its just the four of us. And he has the dinner early so I dont have to drive home in the dark. our family used to always have a big to do on Thanksgiving. That ended like everything else with the pandemic.

(14,275 posts)I was gonna try and make a little somethng , but I can't get to the store in the weather and I'm overwhelmed by cleaning up and clearing out my ex's CRAP and processing the emotions of that debaucle.
We can meet up here and binge watch together!

(20,909 posts)most of us really need to recharge and coping with more negative is not the way to do it. Pick out a good binge watch with the kitties!

(6,245 posts)I get to spend time with my almost-ex wife and my kids and some close friends. Of course I will wash the dishes after a brief nap, but that's the least I can do. Maybe I will get the kids to help.

(725 posts)But in reality it is a stressful time even if you like your family. Shopping, cooking, washing dishes, cleaning up when the guests are gone. But if we step back and ask why are we doing these things its because of tradition thanks Hallmark .Sometimes we have to make new ones that work for us.
Please hug Merlin for me he is adorable.

(6,074 posts)Thanksgivings and Christmases organizing my record collection etc. I got fed up with the battling and belittling. I knew that they were going to talk crap about me whether I was there or not. Didn't need to hear it. Many years ago I knew a guy who was treated so badly by his parents that when he finally hit 18 and was making enough money to leave that's exactly what he did. I knew the parents too. I could see his point. He never spoke to them again or saw them and when they died he was sent notifications of the funerals and there was no response. The parent's had no will and so the estate was to be split between him and sisters. He never responded to accept that either. Think of how bad you have to be to your kid to instill that feeling that deeply.
My deal was bad but not that bad.

(6,379 posts)Only kidding.
But we don't do Thanksgiving in Australia, and we gave up the Christmas family gatherings with hot stodgy food a few years back.
Too many fragmented families to make a big gathering enjoyable, and Christmas time is the hottest part of the year usually, so hot heavy food is out.
We are now vegetarians, so the dead turkey/pig leg went out too.
Could go some devilled eggs though. Just for us two. And the dog,and the cat. No curry for them though.
Sending meaningless Chritmas cards went out quite a few years ago as well. Sorry Hallmark!
But our Christmas tree will go up. It's a metal wire design, about 3 inches high. No decorations, no gifts under it.
In short, do your own thing and don't feel guilty about it. You do you. Enjoy!

(17,704 posts)by myself. I watched every Christmas movie I love because I have them all on DVD. I collect animated Christmas toys so spent time playing every one of them. The teddy bear who reads Twas the Night before Christmas is one of my favorites. And of course there were cuddles with the fur babies. Enjoy!

(93,115 posts)Normally do. No family nearby and not interested in all the rubbish involved in trying to make them allow me some space outside their fantasies about me. It's just so exhausting, I'm happier by myself. I am going to make a dinner with one other person this year because we probably won't ever do it again... one of us is moving away next year.
I'll probably spend the rest of the weekend at home putzing around and be just fine with the lack of stressful people around me.
