(6,581 posts)I saw something in a link that suggests the administration is planning to do something which involves changing HIPPA.
As far as I'm concerned, they just threw us under the bus. But I'm trying to keep an open mind about it.
Here, in this thread. See No. 2:

(36,063 posts)and it shouldn't be forgotten that the states can make their own rules on gun permits, which may push things that the Obama administration didn't.

(19,288 posts)I took care of an officer in the 80's that accidentally shot out his achilles tendon, at the firing range, while he sat, waiting his turn. Even trained professionals have accidents.

(1,089 posts)I find it unsettling that the mentally ill are such a boogeyman recently, but I find encouragement in the fact that when you ask mental health professionals, they can separate their politics from their profession and provide unbiased information. For instance, when the MD Task Force on guns and the mentally ill reported that "significant mental illness" by itself is a weak indicator of risk for violence, and that comorbidity with substance abuse is a far more telling sign. Real answers can lead to real solutions, if the politicians will ever get their heads out of their asses. Here's hopin'.

(1,089 posts)the mental health professionals were not willing to let their patients' rights be thrown away based on flawed public perception. That was a very good sign to me that involving them in the lawmaking process will lead to much better solutions than leaving it entirely up to laymen.

(6,581 posts)Who defines "dangerous"?
And, well, they could have found a better way to word "slipping through the cracks" so it sounded more "official".

http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/01/17/1460601/republicans-claim-mental-health-gun-violence-solution/?mobile=ncAs Republicans rushed to oppose President Obamas gun violence prevention proposals on Wednesday, several lawmakers released statements echoing the National Rifle Associations suggestion that fixing our broken mental health system is actually the best way to prevent future gun crimes. But when Congress considered a landmark mental health access bill in 2008, many of the same Republicans voted against it.
Accessing mental health services in the United States is harder than accessing a gun. In 2008, Congress took a step toward addressing that issue by passing the long-delayed Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which required most health insurance plans to start treating mental health services in the same way they treat all other medical care. The bill included exemptions for small businesses and those who opted not to cover mental health coverage at all, but House Republicans still overwhelmingly opposed the effort, 145 to 47.

(38,893 posts)in their for-profit prisons, then it makes more sense when a group such as ourselves becomes demonized and blacklisted. You can Google for private prisons, taxpayer funded, which advertise a 90% occupancy rate to its investors. Wells Fargo have enormous investments in this. The CCA have been doing drug sweeps at schools...!!! And considering that 46% of those in prison are there on drug-related offences, the "war on drugs" is victorious, in opening new markets for profiteers. Are we next?

(6,581 posts)Comforting thought, isn't it.
Blood is in the water, and the sharks are circling.
Oh well, maybe they'll let all of us here be cell mates.
I think it's time to resurrect my 110% theory - if I am on my 110% best behavior at all times, it still won't matter because they will be looking for any excuse to lock me away.
At least I look pretty good in stripes, well, pinstripes at least.
