Keep focused on this moment (and by all means don't watch the news). Just pay special attention to everything around you right now (what you are eating, textures, sounds). Do things that require your attention to this moment.

You're not alone, I found myself thinking when I heard this latest massacre, "I wonder if the victims vote to keep people like this in weapons". That was a cold , cruel, heartless thought. I'm finding my compassion waning. And that is so not the person I am.
I cancelled my satellite tv in 2015 when I moved to a different state, my life has been better and I encourage you to do the same.

(152,302 posts)Avoiding the news is a good idea, and there are other good ideas here too.
You might try taking a low dose of Melatonin (3 mg.) about an hour before you want to sleep. It can help disconnect you from your thinking self. It's over the counter, too.
I use it regularly and it helps.

Monday night I was so relieved to find some alternative programming on Public TV. - a great relief and needed change.
Among them: Antiques Roadshow, and a POV film about autistic youth who find success in competitive swimming, earning medals at Special Olympics meets in their state.
