(11,948 posts)I've gained 8 back over the last 6 months but have planned to start up on the 1st of August.
No booze. Don't eat from 8pm till noon. Then only protein and veggies at noon and 6.
Once you get into the routine its no big deal and actually seeing results for a change keeps you going.
Good luck

(6,226 posts)However you have to be very strict about carbs because its a high fat diet training your body to burn mostly fat and not carbs.
It doesnt work if you cheat on carbs. I wouldnt stay on it because I dont think we are meant to be fueled by mostly fat.

(54,198 posts)if you have certain conditions, such as epilepsy, it might make sense as this diet apparently can help.
if you're doing it for weight loss, i'd recommend sticking with something more sustainable long-term without the risks.
in any event, if you're going to do it, i'd recommend strict monitoring of things like glucose and ketone levels.
i'm not a fan of fad diets, and particularly not a fan of diets that substantially change once you reach your goal weight (beyond merely ratcheting own portion sizes/calorie intake as you lose weight).

a few berries. I just eat alot of protein and good fats so I'm never hungry. I eat 3 balanced meals and no snacks. No processed sugar, processed starch, or sugar substitute. I eat whole rice and steel cut oats. Greek yoghurt with absolutely no sugar in it. I'm never hungry. I don't go into ketosis. My sister synthesized the advice she got from a whole bunch of experts.

(2,872 posts)I do paleo when I am on vacation or eating out. Then, to loose weight and keep my diabetes in check, I have to eat Keto. I lost 80# and am no longer on metformin nor Victoza.

(6,568 posts)It's a high fat/moderate protein diet. It's also low carb, so that's where you lose the weight.
IOW, it's just another fad diet. Most low/no carb diets are not very good for you. You need carbs. That's where energy comes from.
The ABSOLUTE best diet is to watch your caloric intake and to get moderate exercise.

(2,872 posts)from Dr Berg on YouTube. He has tons of videos. Basically he says that as long as you eat carbs and sugar, your body will produce insulin to take care of it. As long as you have insulin, a powerful hormone, in your body you will not be able to burn fat. Insulin forces your body to store carbohydrates as fat. Fat causes inflamation that leads to many many problems and eventually diabetes.
Check out his many highly informative and well researched videos:
He does sell supplements, but his videos are free and have few ads. I am not being paid to post this, I just really like his videos.
Also check out the cute KetoConnect couple Megha and Matt, who have lots of good videos and recipes for Keto: &list=PL9Jh-cEcSjukg2tYQPBUYri_o7kQ_eMZx

(17,704 posts)carbs as fat. It carries sugar molecules across the cell membrane. The cell uses the sugar to perform whatever function it is supposed to perform. In insulin resistant diabetes the cell wall becomes impenetrable to insulin.

(2,872 posts)1) Burn glucose for cellular energy.
Insulin interacts with glucose to allow the cells of the body to use glucose as energy.
2)Allow glucose to be stored as glycogen.
When there is excess glucose in the bloodstream, known as hyperglycemia, insulin encourages the storage of glucose as glycogen in the liver,
3) Store excess glucose as fat.
When the liver is saturated with glycogen, an alternative pathway takes over. This involves the uptake of additional glucose into adipose tissue, leading to the synthesis of lipoproteins.

In other words, fat will not be burned when blood sugar is high and insulin is present.
Edited to add link.

(6,568 posts)He's not even an MD. He's a chiropractor, and seems to have a HUGE misunderstanding of how the human body works (not surprising, as he never went to med school). He sells dietary supplements. Quack quack quack.
"Highly informative and well researched videos". Nah, he's just pulling shit out of his ass and selling it to the gullible, like any snake oil salesman.

(4,873 posts)because virtually eliminating carbs makes it really hard for your body to store water, so it's important to drink lots of water on this diet. Then it became the Atkins diet. It works for the short term--weight loss is quick and extreme--but it's pretty much impossible to sustain over time, and it's the maintenance of weight loss that's the real problem with diet programs. And you will have dry mouth and bad breath and constipation, especially if you don't drink enough water.
I lost 85 pounds by starting from the point of what I like to eat for each meal, then tailoring portions to make it fit into a 1200 calorie diet. So I was eating things that I like for every meal, in "normal" portions, no snacking and I never did drink soft drinks, and it was easy to stay on this eating program for the rest of my life so far. My weight loss was quick and extreme at first, and now, six years later (haven't gained a pound back) I'm still eating pretty much the same as I was when I started out, and my weight has stabilized. When I get tired of something, I replace it with something else I like to eat, making sure that my portion is what is "normal"--check the package of processed foods, like breakfast cereals, and a generic calorie guide for everything else--to keep it within the 1200 calorie limit.
I lead a pretty sedentary life, so if you're active physically, you'll want to check a chart to find out how many calories you should be consuming at your "normal" weight.

(2,872 posts)Dr Berg encourages that most or all of your carbs be in the form of green leafy vegetables. Large amounts of low carb vegetables are needed to get for example the Recommended Daily Allowance of pottassium and B vitamins.
For example, the RDA is 1600 to 2000 mg. You would need to eat 4 to 5 bananas daily to get that much. So he recommends kale shakes and salads to get that much. Keto and intermittent fasting is the only thing that keeps my blood sugar under control.

(2,872 posts)it's wrong to call it the Stillman diet which was basically a 100% protein diet. The Keto diet is Generally, ranges from 60-75% of calories from fat (or even more), 15-30% of calories from protein, and. 5-10% of calories from carbs. The fat is from healthy sources like avocado and coconut and some fat that naturally occurs with the protein. Carbs are from low-carb vegetables. The protein can come from vegetarian sources such as pea and hemp protein.

(5,111 posts)talking about. I've eaten this way for about three years and have kept off the almost 40 pounds I lost. I eat tons of vegies, a bit of fruit, mostly berries and some melon. "Clean" meat (grass fed and pastured), but not very much because it's kind of pricey. It is highfat so nuts and seeds, coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, etc. Very limited dairy for me (I'm trying to cut it out). I've lost a ton of weight and haven't regained and my numbers are good. It is very healthy if you do it right. It's not the "Atkins low carb diet" that some seem to think it is. Although you can certainly have bacon if that's your thing, just make sure it's nitrate free. I wish people who jump into threads like this knew what they were talking about. The "moderate" low fat, diets people push is replete with grains and sugars and not healthy at all in my opinion. Although the processed food companies love it. The way I and most people I know do it uses whole foods - avoid the packaged stuff, artificial sweeteners Just stick to lots of veggies, good fats, moderate protein. If you do it right you are never hungry and it becomes very easy to pass up the breads and sugary desserts. I just ate a small bit of watermelon with my lunch and it was the most lusious, delicious thing...

(2,872 posts)a Keto diet to the High Carb Diabetic Diet? I'd like to see real ones and not studies sponsored by the American Agricultural Committee.

(1 post)A keto diet refers to a ketogenic diet, which is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carb diet. The goal is to get more calories from protein and fat than from carbs. It works by depleting your body of its store of sugar, so it will start to break down protein and fat for energy, causing ketosis (and weight loss).
1. Aids in weight loss

(13 posts)From the start a little while, you'll lose for the most part water weight because of a decline in calories. This will fall off rapidly, enabling you to drop 10 pounds or more, altogether, in 30 days or less. Keto diets reduce your hunger, blood sugar, and insulin levels. It leads to more weight loss at first. Triglycerides lead to drop drastically. Increased levels of 'Good' HDL Cholesterol. May lower blood pressure.
