DIY & Home Improvement
Related: About this forumI think this will be an inconvenient year for me to have to see about getting a new roof
Apparently the 'gravel' is wearing away. I MIGHT be able to squeeze through until next Spring. Well, I might actually have to, even if that means using tarps. I intended to start calling places early in the Spring but that's when everything closed down. Then, with all of the yard and garden work to do, it just slipped from my mental 'to do' list.
I have two companies coming by for estimates. I know everyone is running so far behind due to work backlog and availability of staff so if I'm close to critical, hopefully they can give me good advice on maintaining until the work can be done. Fortunately, except for the gravel, the shingles seem secure and I don't have any discernable leaks.
This is one of those times I miss being an apartment dweller

(38,958 posts)I believe the home improvement/repair craze will dissipate within the next two quarters and the companies will be begging for business.

(27,321 posts)The first place said they are short handed on estimators so I won't hear from them, to make an actual appointment, for at least 72 hours. The other company, that I've used before to put a new roof on the garden barn, is sending someone out on Thursday. I'm not sure how late into the year they do roofing work but I'm anticipating having to wait.

(6,288 posts)a lot of damage and the roof was about 10 years old but I guess enough shingles blew off to justify the insurance company replacing it.

(7,715 posts)We paid for a roof rider that covers leaks (at least stopping them temporarily). It doesn't cover leaks around skylights etc, but anyways it might be something to look at as a stop gap until things settle down?
The beauty is that if the home warranty company doesn't take care it of right away, they can be on the hook for subsequent damage. So, they'll probably send their contracted roofers out right away.

(27,321 posts)I figure, at my age, this is the last roof I'll have to replace. I want to get this place fixed up, sell it, and move someplace smaller and easier to maintain.

Hope you get a good quote and a good contractor.
Make sure and get references and that you get EVERYTHING in writing.

(27,321 posts)They replaced all of the kitchen and front bedroom windows and put a new roof on the garden barn. It's a local and well respected company with very good rates and great work. They've also done work at my mom's house, and my neighbor used them for a new roof, last year, and she said she is very pleased with the work.
My plan is to see what kind of deal they can give me if I also get two screen doors replaced. And next year I'm going to replace the Livingroom and bedroom big sliding windows so maybe I can get a package deal.

(21,961 posts)done. I wasn't happy about that increase and haggled him down to 1K. I think we both walked away happy.

(23,460 posts)We did tar and gravel the first time and the last time got the foam roof. Really like it and has insulated our house better. And it was the same price with a 25 year guarantee vs 15 years max with tar and gravel.

(27,321 posts)I was really happy with the place that reroofed the garden barn and installed the windows at my house and the doors at my mom's. They are more a home improvement company than a specific roofing company but they do really good work. The other place I called only does roofing but if I get a good deal on Thursday, I might cancel that estimate. I'm going to see if they will bundle two new screen doors into the deal, at a discount.
