Work is starting on my new roof, windows and doors TODAY

Originally the windows and screen doors were supposed to be done, by now, but I understood the delay. My contractor called at about 7:30 this morning (he's done work for me, before, and said he remembered I was an 'early riser') to let me know the guys would be here by 9. Hopefully all will be done in 3 or 4 days.

I'm going to be a bit poorer, soon, but I'm still pretty happy, right now.

1. short term loss for

long term gain... always have to look at the long game (as much as possible)

had a lot of relatively expensive work on my house last year... this year, big savings on propane and big increase in comfort

3. I don't begrudge a single dollar I'm spending

The windows are the original from 1968! I had all but the living room and master bedroom done a couple of years ago. The doors are a bit newer but in serious need of replacement. The roof is about 15 years old, and needed to be done in the next year, or so, anyway. The metal roof will make having to go through this, again, a thing of the past, for me.

Plus, I'm using a locally owned company, which is always a positive.

Next, more painting and then out with the carpet so the wood floors can shine. I'm dragging this house out of 20th Century Brady Bunch mode, into the 21st Century Siwsan mode.

my dogs went deaf. They stopped barking at every car going by with loud music playing . . .

And it is a great group of guys - all wearing masks.

Today isn't TOO noisy, but I expect that will change when they really start in on the roof. They are able to place the metal roof right on top of the shingles, since there's just one layer, so that should expedite things.

7. I'm curious about how they install a metal roof

The biggest problem, today, is I have to turn off the furnace while they are putting in the windows so the house is getting a little bit chilly. Not bad, but I hope they don't run into any issues. Thankfully, none so far.

9. Here, they screw the metal pieces on

The panels are made with "humps" along the sides that lock together and keep the water from going underneath. Make sure the screws they use have metal washers (I think they are lead) rather than plastic or rubber. The metal washers will last as long as the roof does, the plastic or rubber will break down long before the roof needs replacing.

We put a metal roof on our old doublewide and loved it so much when we built this house, we put a metal roof on it. With that, and with Hardieboard concrete siding, the weakest points are the windows. We may have to replace them before we die, but that is OK.
