I clearly dont have the stamina I had when I was younger. Today has been half-hour bursts of turning over the bed along the front walk, alternating with half-hour chunks of resting and watching trial coverage. But tomorrow I get the fun of going to the nursery to pick out flowers for that bed. Im thinking of bright yellow mini zinnias and white alyssum. Maybe lobelia.

(10,005 posts)Alyssum, boy howdy I love that stuff. Its delicate looking but tolerant of difficult conditions (hot, cold, dry, light trampling) and in our area, can withstand freezing well into November. We plant it every spring where neeeded and even have some that has reseeded itself for going on 5 years.

(15,206 posts)Alyssum is one of those plants I couldnt do without. Its sturdy and the deer wont eat it. It reseeds itself and it easy to transplant to where you need it. In spite of the volunteers, though, I always also need to buy a couple of flats.
I use white alyssum to bring some cohesiveness to my rather random assortment of flowering plants and herbswhen everything I surrounded by white alyssum, it all looks very deliberate and planned.

Amazing stuff. We just got our garden in this weekend and as you do, always include more alyssum to help out the volunteers.
