I was showing someone my garden the other day

Dh and I have to leave for a few days in a few weeks, so I was having the person that will be watching the house/pets/yard over to see what sort of watering they'll need to do. It's pretty minimal since most stuff is now on the irrigation system, but there are some pots that need water.

Anyway, I walked her through the veggie garden and showed her some stuff she could harvest if she's interested. I know her well enough to know what sort of foods she eats. I pointed to the arugula, which is growing in one of my raised beds amongst a dwarf tomato and some nasturtiums. She asked if it was ready to eat. I said yes (somewhat confused, frankly) and picked a bit of it to show her how I harvest it.

Then I pointed out some kale and chard. Now, I know she eats it! She said she wasn't sure when to harvest it.

It was then I realized that she would not be surviving the zombie apocalypse.

Yes, I showed her how to harvest and noted that anytime any of the pointy or curved leaves poked up, she could harvest it.

doesn’t garden, maybe she buys her veggies from farmers market or grocery store. Just because you eat it doesn’t mean you know how to harvest certain vegetables.
