Will this work? I had 2 cukes on hills in the garden. They got about 4" then just fell over and died. I watered every day. My peas and beans in the same area are doing fine.
So, I was thinking of planting one in a pot with 8" of garden soil and potting mixture. Anyone ever try this?
Thanks for suggestions.

(217 posts)but, the problem you are having is probably insect related. Beetles bring in a bacterium that causes cukes to wilt this way. It also effects melons, squash and to a lesser extent pumpkins.
After many years of getting just a few before they succumb to the wilt, this year I have my cukes in a bed that has a floating row cover to prevent the beetles from getting to the plants. So far so good.
So give it a try. If they wilt and die again, its them damn beetles.

I planted a seed in the pot on that same day and kept it covered after it sprouted. It grew and grew. And I waited and waited til finally, a couple weeks ago, I got cukes. I only got 4 but they are ever so tasty. Hopefully next year I will be able to grow more. Sure grateful for the advice and what I did grow.
