2. orlando....kinda tropical.

the big problem down in the semi-tropical parts of the South is to keep stuff from over-growing.
I hack back more than I plant.

You can grow citrus, that's a plus.
Heave rains and storms can mess up a garden.
Possums, armadillos and raccoons will love any food you plant, I have had to resort to wrfe fencing and even overhead screening to keep some of my stuff safe.
Also to row covers, to keep insects from devouring the plants, and mulch, to keep moisture in.
Summer heat is brutal, many things here grow best in light shade that would need direct sun further north.

Cool weather plants have a very short season, sometimes none at all, like this year.

Good news...lots of excellent websites for Southern/semi tropical gardening, and LOTS of sweet smelling plants.

3. My sister is in east Tennessee.

I go down to visit her occasionally. What area do you have questions about? She is in the northern part of east TN, close to the VA border.

I have to say, the difference between TN and Orlando is significant.
