Felix was 16 years old. We rescued him and his litter mate, Oscar, when they were 6 months old. The dynamic duo!
Felix somehow contracted bronchitis. The cough was horrendous and we thought we would lose him last weekend. He rallied on Sunday. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were good days. He ate, took his meds and tried to play. Wednesday night he started coughing again - a wet cough.
Thursday the 13th we made the decision to let him cross the Rainbow Bridge. He sweetly passed.
His brother, Oscar, is lost. He wouldnt go to bed Thursday night because Felix was not there. Yesterday he thoroughly searched the garage looking for Felix. He is a very sad doxie.
A couple of other DUers have lost old pets this week, too. My heart goes out to you. We know when they reach this age to take each day as it comes, to love them, to hold them, and to let them go gently into that good night.
Oh my Pookie Felix I miss you but I know Rascal, Candy, Sammy and Bo (quite a cast of characters) have a new playmate. Oscar will join you in his own time but for now he gets lots of hugs, snuggles and walkies.
PS - thank you the heart it means a lot.

(63,519 posts)I am so saddened to hear your beloved companion, Felix, has departed for the Bridge.
Nothing hurts as badly as when our fur babies depart.
And poor sweet Oscar...
Healing vibes on the way to you & Oscar to heal your hearts.

(629 posts)You and Oscar can comfort each other.
Did Oscar have a chance to see Felix after he passed? I think animals understand death but do not understand sudden disappearance. Whenever possible, I let the other animals, especially bonded ones, see and sniff the body before burial. But I have the luxury of home burial, its harder to accommodate that if you opt for cremation.

My deepest sympathies.

(1,158 posts)We turned a corner yesterday and he is his happy, goofy little self again.
He has moved to Felixs place on the couch to nap. Yesterday, caught him looking over the bar at me while I loaded the dishwasher. Felix used to do this, too.
Thank you all for the hearts and good wishes.
