Maybe that is part of why I cried when Princess Diana died. Sure a lot of us married women felt sympathy for her. But I had also seen people I care about get ill and die. Her embracing AIDS patients was a big deal and showed compassion that was rare at the time.

The Gay Men's Health Crisis Center in NYC is one of my favorite charities. When the media was ignoring the facts they got the information out about what was going on. They did it not just for gay men but various people being hurt. They got out information about people losing jobs and homes and children being orphaned. Thanks to them I learned so much about what was going on and it drowned out the ignorant rhetoric.

I also know this was the definitive time when I knew I could not join, be a part of, or raise my child in any religion. I know it brings solace to some people but I just cannot forget the absolute hate and intolerance that was being preached.
