Big Tent News: Obama's Gay Rights To Do List -Eight Big Ideas

Big Tent News: Obama's Gay Rights To Do List -Eight Big Ideas
from Richard Socarides in the New Yorker

The election was three weeks ago, but gays, lesbians, and their supporters are still jubilant over the results—which many consider a turning point for the gay rights movement. Not only was the first pro-gay-marriage President reëlected but his support for gay rights helped put him over the top, energizing base constituencies and generating campaign contributions from liberal donors. That kind of success has one drawback. Gay-rights advocates worry that because they have been so successful over these past four years, they might be hard-pressed to come up with an equally bold and ambitious agenda for the second Obama term. That President Obama gets his judicial appointments through the Senate in a timely manner. Especially if a Supreme retires!

I've long thought that LGBT rights would be ultimately settled in federal court. Many of the state laws and voter initiatives will be challenged. And a Republican House with an similarly aligned Senate and White House could cause much mischief.

But if the judiciary is progressive, or even moderate, the damage could be remedied.

Obama's greatest social issues legacy would be to give the USA a judicial branch who will support freedoms for all, and especially the LGBT community and their supporters who have shown the way in a generation long battle, whose end looks to be in sight.

Let's all keep up the pressure.
