U.S. Navy relieves commander of coronavirus-hit aircraft carrier
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy announced on Thursday it had relieved the commander of the U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote a scathing letter that leaked to the public asking Navy leadership for stronger measures to control a coronavirus outbreak onboard.

(60,565 posts)1. Does that mean he is kicked out of military?
Or moved to another position?
Guessing, even if the latter, he's screwed for life now that he told truth & tried to protect his crew. Does he have legal recourse?
Sure hope he spills - maybe on Rachel's show!

The ship is more or less incapacitated as it has diverted from its preplanned mission essential operational schedule. Therefore heads must roll. this would have happened in any case with or without the letter or press leak. I wonder if the strike force commander is or was on the ship.
Also, the fundamental lapse in judgement was the port call in Danang while there were known covid cases in country. What is the point of a nuclear powered vessel if you continue to make port calls when there is literally no need to do so?
Its the same conundrum with the pending RIMPAC exercise. Are some of those forces actually going to be allowed to land or go ashore, in Hawaii?
