~snip~
The proposed budget sets aside $324 million for new work at military bases in the region, down from $581 million last year.
The request includes $144 million for air field improvements that would benefit a new Army helicopter brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and another $85 million to help the Navy prepare to move 28 Boeing-made submarine-hunting jets to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
The budget also continues funding for two Puget Sound-made Boeing projects, the Air Force refueling tanker known as the KC-46A and the Whidbey Island-bound Navy P-8 Poseidon.
The tanker, to be manufactured in Everett, would receive about $1.6 billion next year, down from $1.8 billion this year.

The biggest jobs and corporate bailout programs in human history ... this is the Washington state grant.
What we need to do is put Social Security, unemployment insurance, health care, etc. under the Pentagon -- call them 'National Security Personnel Maintenance' programs and then no politicians will want to tough them.

(60,011 posts)2. There goes what little peace and quiet was to be had on Whidbey.
When I lived there, the Navy jets would roar over the Island barely clearing the tree tops...scared the shit out of nesting birds.
We would complain to the Navy base officials, they would apologize, and it would happen again and again.
The only positive thing was all the rain and clouds kept the low flying down.
Now MORE jets?
Oak Harbor base ought to be pretty toxic by now.
