She still remembers at her being 76 years old , I never knew mike my uncle. I do know his mom my grandmother still feeling the pain into the 90s until she passed over mike. She used to say a parent should not have to bury a child.
As former infantry vet I am thankful I never had to be in war.

My best friend was killed in Nam the last week of April in 1970, but the May 1 date sticks out to me. That is the day I got home after my Freshman year of college to be met by my Mother bawling her eyes out at the front door with the news.
My son, who is now 33, is named after him. I had already turned from a young Goldwater Republican to an anti-war protester during my first year, but this news pushed me over the line into full-blown radicalism.
What a waste, and what a shame that assholes like Trump now use the military to bolster their undemocratic agendas.

Too damn many "sweet kids" and even not-so-sweet kids who didn't deserve to die. My generation. I am lucky that I only know of 1 person who was KIA -- the younger brother of a guy I dated in my senior year. Didn't really know him, thank heaven. But I'm sure it was too like the end of the world to that dear family.
I think most of us in my generation carry a heavy burden of grief from that war, and those senseless deaths. It took me many years before I could watch any 'Nam movies.

(4,940 posts)The years between make no difference - the empty is still there. I thank him for his service then, and you for yours, TEB.
As I was "only a girl ", no combat for me and I joined right at the tail end of that....ahem... "CONFLICT" (my butt, that was a war, no matter what the powers--that-be wanted to term it).
I am also thankful you were spared that horror. Both my ex (good guy) and his brother did 2 tours each. Neither ever "got over it".)
