chickens up until 12 years ago when my job had me on the road... as soon as I knew I was going to leave that job I ordered 50 chicks and 2 packages of honeybees (they will come in a couple of months)...

the chicks I am getting are an assortment of most all kinds of egg layers (including some fancy breeds as requested by my son's partner )

Of a few of what you're getting the Reds (NH and RI) are great layers and Silkies are wonderful brooders... and look so cool too. You probably know this though.

We have a small hobby farm (currently 3 mini horses and a 'Fainter' goat) and had a variety of around 2 dozen chickens (mostly Orpington) plus a few ducks until last year when we were nearly wiped out by a series of predator attacks. We gave a good friend the survivors and hopefully (hubby's health allowing) will be rebuilding much sturdier coops this year.

need to get my shoulder put back together, and until i have a date for that, everything is up in the air.
last year i concentrated on my brown layers, and now i need some more easter eggers.

getting a few eggs now and tempted to hatch them up. laying in feb is a good trait. unfortunately, all my eggs right now are brown.

i am all about that egg basket, but at the same time, i am not comfortable w an annual infusion from mc murray. my goal is sustainability above all, so i raise my own.
the only known outbreaks of salmonella in back yard flocks was traced to big hatcheries, and prolly fleet farm chicks.

i did mostly brown layers last year, and need a shot of green. but roos are an issue, so i do the best i can w 3/4 and half breeds, and a couple pure breds.

then i have a sorta blown rotator cuff surgery in the pipeline...
might be a good year to take a year off. i can wait another year to conquer the chicken world.

I ordered some chickens last fall. I got 5 cuckoo marans hens and 5 black copper marans cocks. I love the plumage on the cuckoo ones, since I've always loved Barred Rocks, but the egg color on the Black Coppers is darker so I thought I'd cross the two and then maybe back cross using a Cuckoo marans cock.

I have half french cuckoos and half regular ones.

Then I have a bunch of mutt chickens, mostly part cuckoo marans and silky. We had this one little silky hen, probably lived to be ten, she went rogue and hatched out all kinds of offspring.
