Racial differences in the United States are prevalent regardless of geography. While social and economic gaps are wider in some states than in others, the gaps exist across all areas, and we were unable to identify any states where black Americans are better off than white residents. For this reason, we expanded last years list of the 10 worst states for black Americans to include all 50 states.
Across virtually all social and economic measures, there are wide racial disparities. Compared to white people in the United States, African Americans are considerably less likely to own their homes, twice as likely to be unemployed, nearly three times as likely to live in poverty, and five times more likely to go to prison.

(113,131 posts)It should be right there with New Jersey.
Everyone thinks of Massachusetts as a liberal blue haven, but the racism that exists there is scary.

(3,867 posts)I thought Alabama & Mississippi would head the list.
Fl at #4 is also shocking, I guess the only ones that are not a surprise are NJ & LA.
Think I have to examine their methods more closely.

(18,017 posts)appears to be disparity between races. Absolute well being is not considered. I am not black so I cannot say, but living in West Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Iowa; I would prefer to live in Iowa. I saw more overt racism in Mississippi, West Virginia and Tennessee.
One of the largest African American communities in Iowa is in my sister community. No doubt there is a high degree of segregation. I know the other community does spend more per student than our community though (it is within a few hundred dollars the last time I checked).
My daughter is in a private nursing school in that community, and she has no African American cohorts in her class. Overall it appears enrollment does match the demographics of the state.
