Women sue Idaho over expensive hair-braiding license rules

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Three Idaho women are suing the state in federal court over its expensive training requirement for professional hair-braiders.

The women, represented by the Institute for Justice, filed the lawsuit against the Idaho Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board in Boise’s U.S. District Court on Tuesday, the Idaho Statesman reported.

Idaho is one of five states that still require cosmetology licenses for professional hair braiding. The licenses require 1,600 hours of training and can cost up to $20,000, even though cosmetology schools aren’t required to teach braiding techniques for naturally textured hair.

The requirement means it can be difficult to find anyone offering hair braiding services. People who braid hair without a license are afraid to advertise. Okech said a number of traveling nurses recently came to her because they couldn’t find any professional braiders.

1. I have a girlfriend who's house is a girl's night beauty party once a week.

It's hair and nails and wine sipping time. We trade jewelry, purses and clothes while the girl talk rings off the walls. Some of the women can braid so fast with such precision it will snap your head back.

They don't need no stinking certificate. It's an oppressive racket designed to keep women beat down and ostracized from financial independence. They have hours of experience that far exceed any phoney requirements the state has cooked up.

I hope they win their suit and mark up a win for social-racial justice because we know that's really what's at the heart of this crap.

2. This is a good thing for these women

but the Institute for Justice is a Libertarian non-profit that also supports "parental choice" in education that allows for public money to go to private schools. Gov Kim Reynolds, IA, must love them.

Funny how "freedon-loving" libertarians never work on women's right to choose.
