Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing - At the Super Bowl. Yea or Nay?

It's a great song.

But it feels like I got thrown a bone. What is really being done? I would love to see a collage of images of the work that NFL players are doing in communities. I would love to see numbers flash of the charitable donations that owners are making in these communities. Maybe during the song, there could be a collage of those whom we have lost to acts of violence. I have heard that they started adding the song because of George Floyd. A song? Really?

It's football not a sacred rite performed by sacred people.
Although some think it is.

Not an either/or.
Inspirational music inspires action. African American music is one of the glories of the world.

Besides, it drives the racists crazy to be reminded how inferior they are.

3. If we also included the Latino-American nat'l anthem, the Asian-American nat'l anthem...

the native-American nat'l anthem and on and on and on.

Come on. And I'm African-American. No. Don't we have enough issues dividing Americans now?

4. 56% of NFL players are African-American.

From that perspective, perhaps it makes sense to include it, though I think it might have more to do with the league's ongoing fight against racism and for equality.

6. I don't like singling/SEPARATING out one ethnic group over all the others.

Include other ethnic group anthems (if there are such things. Where will that end, at every occasion the Nat'l Anthem is now played? That can get kinda ridiculous), or just leave it as is.

Bet if the Black players are polled, most don't care, they just want to play the game.

And incidentally, I'm not crazy about "The Star Spangled Banner" either as it has a few racist passages in it's later verses...the ones not sung at big evens.

5. Some of the things you mentioned were included in the zillion-hour pre-game.

They often do stories about charitable contributions, community outreach, and the like in the pre-game and pretty much throughout the playoffs. And Thanksgiving. And Christmas.

I only watch football because my husband loves it and after 20 years, I know the basics. Like which one is the quarterback, and what a sack is. Although I'm still learning about the pocket.

When my husband said that there was a four hour show about football and football players I was not excited. An opportunity to work on my blogs.

And if I'm REALLY going to confess, I thought the first half of the game was so boring that I went to bed. Watched the halftime show on YouTube in the morning.
