Famine Lecture Series

Open to all.

Commencing Thursday 19th January 2023 for 6 weeks.

There will be an opportunity for a Q&A at the end of each lecture with a brief interval between speakers.

Each lecture will be recorded and uploaded to Councils YouTube channel to accommodate those unable to attend live.

Registration to attend the series provides access to each lecture in the entire series.

I am looking forward to this lecture series being a descendant of survivors from the Great Famine in Ireland.

I know some of my ancestors fled Ireland. The kids popped up in NYC in the 1850 census. I know the parents names, and family lore as to where they originated, but that's been a dead end.

They left New York and sailed around the Cape Horn to San Francisco.

I was told this growing up as a kid, "They came around The Horn" I was told.

I found them on the old passenger list to San Francisco!

It took a lot of time and research but at least I know!

Keep on looking!

mam’s mam and da’s da both came in the coffin ships. rosie o’regan was alone, in her 20’s, and i believe coming to be patrick dwyer’s bride. daniel and eleanor cahill brought their 3 young kids w them. joe was my grandfather. all in steerage on white star ships.
another branch of the fam goes back to the 1800’s, here in chi. we dont call it the 5th province for nuthin.
i dont think i’d be as bitter about being born here if i hadnt been born at the end of the commuter line, out in the burbs, too far from all the old ones. i knew them, those that were still around after i was born. but i rarely saw them, and about zero stories came down from that gen, at.all.
i barely heard about my grandparents, only 1 of which was even around for me to know.
my older sibs were born in the city, surrounded by fam on both sides. prolly 50 w/in a square mile. esp my oldest sister spent a lot of time w the dwyer grands. grandparents are such a gift.

i’ve learned so much of my history in the last few yrs. i’m so grateful for it.
my biggest regret in the downfall of twitter is the irish news and irish friends that i’ll likely lose track of.

My father's family came over as a result of the famine and opened a bar (of course) in downtown Boston.

5. My great great grandmothers obit

In her obit. it states "Boston Papers please copy".

So, this likely means I have relatives in Boston as well.

6. McCarthys from County Clare here

Settled on Irish Mountain in Raleigh County WV. Schoolteachers. St. Colman's Church is still there, as is the cemetery. McCarthys, Sullivans--more I can't remember. It's online.
