3. I guess this is a different author, but I read "The Cat Who..." books by Lilian Jackson Braun

I liked them a lot, my mother even read them, too. And there are plenty of them, I looked it up and there are 29!

Rita Mae Brown also wrote a cozy series with a cat - and friends - as a major character. Though the main human character is a postmistress in a small town. I read those, too.

6. I don't read like I used to but for a long time it was my main habit

I just had to have a book to read - and they were mainly mysteries - I was desperate if I didn't have a book. In fact, there were certain authors I read more than once. I'd find an author that I liked and would go through everything they'd written.

I actually stated with Dick Francis, he was a retired steeplechase jockey (used to ride for the Queen Mother) whose first mysteries involved horses and racing, then he started researching other subjects (a storm chaser, a wine maker, an early computer expert, a politician) and based his mysteries on them. My mother got one of his latest books for my uncle when he was in the hospital, but it turned out he'd read it. So she brought it home and I picked it up - and I was hooked.

Another favorite of mine was Anne Perry. She's also British, but her mysteries are period pieces and she has more than one series. And then there's Miriam Grace Monfredo, she's an American historian who bases her mysteries on the Civil War and the early women's movement. There used to be a mystery bookstore that I went to regularly (until the owner started selling books online ) who knew Ms. Monfredo so she held a book signing and so I met her.

So yes, I used to read quite a bit. That's just a small part of my list, my favorites.

Those are "The Cat Who..." books. I also used to read Rita Mae Brown's books and ran across a non-mystery one of hers that I really liked called "Dolley Madison in Love and War" which is a historical novel. Your wife might also be interested in the ones I read since it appears we have the same tastes...

14. Carole Nelson Douglas writes the Midnight Louie books

Louie is a 20 pound black cat who fancies himself a PI

He and his human live in Vegas. She is a PR person who handles publicity for a casino/hotel- and she is a strong independent woman

Other characters include: a defrocked priest, a magician, a ditsy landlady, a formidable police officer who sings in a night club in her off hours, assorted other animals and some bad guys

These books are a fun read. The author lives here in Ft Worth and is a solid Democrat

i will miss her. we crossed paths occasionally at our Democratic Woman's Club.

There are a few Louies that I have not read. I think I will track them down and read them next after I finish The Sisterhood books. (Fern Michaels; excellent series with some great characters. No cats so far but a very interesting assortment of dogs.)
