(18,219 posts)I am still reading The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough.....slow slow going, especially at the beginning when I was flummoxed by all the names, but it is a good book.

(10,044 posts)Third in the Charlie Moon series, and also my third time reading. I have totally forgotten what it's about, but I recall that my favorites were after the 4th.
Took back about 7 books to the library without reading more than a few pages in any of them. Just couldn't get interested in any of them, but Doss won't give me a problem. I'll enjoy seeing my print friends again.

(23,156 posts)For a number of years I bought pretty much all the books I wanted to read, but didn't always get around to reading them. Now, thanks to being somewhat less affluent, I've rediscovered the joys of the library. I frequently return books unread, and don't feel guilty about it.

(10,044 posts)After I borrow a book, if I really like it and don't want to part with it - that's when I go out and buy it. The more people borrow, the happier they are.
Blue Cup is a very very old Ute shaman who wants to catch a bad man, also a Ute -
"But first there was a more powerful magic to attempt. He would go to the great black stone that had fallen from the sky. The stone that had the marks of many powerful men. Blue Cup's lips made a serene smile. Softly he began to hum his favorite melody.

(10,044 posts)It was better this time than the other times I read it.
I may read it again if I live long enough. I'd like to remember some of the interesting phrases like "..a swarm of molecules, driven by pressure," is just the wind blowing....
Such a mixture of unschooled but charming superstitious characters and the scientific causes of conditions is so fascinating to me..
I hate that the author died.

(23,156 posts)I'm nearly done and so far it's excellent. This is her first book, and she's got three or four others out, and I'll probably read them also.

(28,901 posts)...featuring Virgil Flowers, Minnesota criminal investigator/muskie fisherman/serial divorcee. This one isn't quite as funny as the previous Virgil novels---it's more of a police procedural, involving the pursuit of some young mass murderers. It took me a while to get this book from the library: by the time I reserved it, there were a hundred people ahead of me. I hope there's a Virgil movie in the works, and that it does the character justice.

(28,901 posts)And he did a good job of it. I stand to be corrected, but I don't think he's done Virgil. I think Owen Wilson would be a good fit for the part.

They've only done one (Certain Prey?) movie so far as I know. It was good but not as good as the book tho.
