A burro is an ass.
A burrow is a hole in the ground.

You need to know the difference.

So is my soon to be 27 yr son. He was a certified writing fellow in college.

Several weeks ago we had a very interesting text exchange involving the proper placement of punctuation inside or outside parentheses.

Yes, we are word nerds.

For many years I was a professional typesetter and proofreader.
To my embarrassment I can't stop myself from correcting other people's spelling errors.
They just jump out at me. It's a disease!

...peeves are:

1. the ubiquitous apostrophe at the end of any word ending with an 's'

2. "Him and me went to the movies." People do it correctly in the singular. No one ever says, "Him went to the movies," or "Me went to the movies." Why doesn't it translate to the plural?

3. I have heard several instances of people making a possessive out of "I" - Mary and I's vacation.

Some years back when my sister and I both had young children, I asked her why she didn't correct those usages from her children. She rather airily replied that they'd hear the correct usage from her (which they did) and would shift over to the correct usage. I knew then that wouldn't happen, and of course it didn't.

Meanwhile, because I'm such a grammar Nazi, my grown sons use lie and lay correctly.

Some years back, whenever a co-worker would post some sort of note on the communal bulletin board, I'd cheerfully make grammar and usage corrections. After a while, the co-workers would ask me to proof their notes before they posted them.

I have given serious thought to always having a bottle of white-out with me to correct the many errors I see in public.
