The world turns in a day
like it always will
Time unfurls and takes you
along for the ride
Part of life is in the being
Part of life is a collection
of small clips.
Remember when you played
as a child
How it made time pass in a blink.
Remember when you studied hard,
or worked at something with all your focus,
and twelve hours seemed to go by without notice.
And the next thing you know,
I guess it's always the next thing.
When you were young you thought about
how cool it was just to sit and talk with an old
person and listen to their experiences
about this whole affair called life,
and maybe this was your way of preparing.
You wondered, what will I look like when I am old
How will I act.
Who will I be.
Will I be okay.
Will I still matter.
Will a young person enjoy listening to what I have to say.
What kind of family will I still have.
When you get old,
you might find that your own internal story,
the one you lived into in some ways,
becomes more closer to actual reality
revealing a finer truth when you scrutinize
the memory closer
line by line
Sometimes
You tried new things out,
in your actions and manners,
trying to be bold, perhaps you were
unclear, yet you still thought that it was okay
in a vast collection of memories
that you might recollect, or maybe not.
And now, now you recoil a bit,
thinking back and viewing
your memory as if you were just
a character in a story
And perhaps these memories become
truer to true reality
Sometimes this means something
You become You
with more ease
because you really had nothing to hide
but your own pride
Maybe you become happier in some
ways when You are old
But you got to stick with a plan
I think by then You know
Because there is no more faking
About any time
In the history of time
there never was a day
like tomorrow -
actually, there were
billions as each day's
shadows, the collection
grows, line by line
And you become different
instead of indifferent,
maybe a slight smidgen more steadfast and kinder, just a bit more.
You take your time
when you smile
A new set of teeth couldn't hurt
