the decline
caught in the midst of the decline not knowing where to turn
to look up or down left or right there is no answer and no hint
while struggling with the incline having no intentions to learn
whether to surrender or to fight attacking straight or to relent
and though the path looks smooth many obstacles lay hidden
a push ahead foot sore bone weary dry eyed and dry throated
no matter the direction to choose confusion comes unbidden
washed out vistas grow more dreary full of carcasses bloated
unable to move on yet moving on to suffer of every indignity
having long lost count of the steps as if it had ever mattered
the calculated intent on proving life has passed beyond pity
reaching over heights and depths flags and banners tattered
what is the darkness on the horizon is it the final destination
if only the dark sun would brighten removing all of hesitation
